Lights

Apparently they haven't heard of Lights, Cameras, Action. They got the Cameras, Action part but maybe it was just my copy but it was very dark. Hard to tell what was going on in some scenes.

Sorry to break it to you, but it is called "Sombre".

I'm guessing it's more of a Dogme 95 style of a film. I know this director is very visually artistic. Chances are if it is dark, then it is supposed to be that way. I just got it in the mail, and I'm dying to see it.
Besides the lack of lighting: did you enjoy yhe film? What was your take on it?

reply

I love Dogme 95 and the New French Extremity and to be honest, I didn't think very much of it...

reply

Now I'm really curious to see it!
Did you feel it was poorly done, or....?
What were your thoughts?

reply

I thought that
1)it felt a bit "oh, let's make a film. Anyone got any ideas? How about something about a serial killer? That always works..."
2)some of the plot is pretty ridiculous. That wouldn't usually bother me, but for some reason it did. Perhaps because rather than presenting "ideas" it seemed that the aim of the film was to show something "real".
3)it wasn't very focused (again, not a criticism I would usually throw at a piece of work but...).
Essentially it felt a bit like a student film to me. (not that all student films are bad. What I mean is that it felt sort of "uninspired" and pointless. Films like Irreversible and Festen (going with the most popular from both the aforementioned "movements") really punch you in the face, whereas Sombre sort of hangs around you for a bit, trying to look intimidating but just looks sort of...pathetic. Not that being completely OTT hardcore is what makes a good film (see Tarkovsky, Tarr, Kieslowsky...) oh God, I'm rambling. Sorry for the lecture.)

did you see La Vie Nouvelle by chance YorkTom.
I loved that....really unique style and approach. I'm hoping Sombre will be similar in style, with a serial killer theme. The director's use of sound in La Vie Nouvelle is remarkable.
I'll have to watch SOMBRE tonight methinks!

No, I've not seen it, but the IMDB recommendations on it (Trouble Every Day, Mister Lonely, À ma soeur!, Twentynine Palms) does make it sound interesting. What's the sound like? A sort of Tarkovskian "ambience" or playing with the sound?

reply

just a lot of background audio, almost silent, sometimes muffled, similar to Lynch's Inland Empire. This just heightens the often uncomfortable situations the lead character gets in.

The use of blurring the image is also used well too....i hope you get to see it. Not exactly pleasurable but certainly, for me, great cinema.

..........but it's all about Zulawski for me this weekend it seems :-)
