Will someone please explain the ending to me?
I understand that Simon gets the potion instead of Owen; and at the end Owen says that he won't be seeing Mr. Rice for a while, so does that mean that Owen's Hodgkin's is gone? Or does it simply mean that Owen is going fight the Hodgkin's?

havent seen this movie for years but it looks like it means that owen isnt gonna die for a while

I think it means Owen is going to fight it and appreciate life while he has it, Mr Rice's letter gives him a new outlook on life, and by giving Simon the elixir he proves himself to be the better man.
Owen may still die very young but he's saying he's not afraid of it anymore unlike at the beginning when he was consumed by it and kept saying he would see Mr Rice 'soon'
I'm replying to a very old post, but this board doesn't get a lot of responses.
As others have said, I think Owen just chose to live his life wherever it led with Hodgkin's rather than assuming he was not long for this world. In other words: He lost the will to die.
