Does anyone know why no more Wexford mysteries have been released?

The Wexford mysteries were shown on the U.S. cable channel A&E back in the 1990s, and I remember enjoying them. However, only three of them ("Harm Done," "Road Rage," and "Simisola") have been released on DVD, either in the U.S. or the U.K.

Why only these three?

The other Wexford mysteries were apparently released on VHS in the U.K. What is preventing them from being released on DVD?

I read an article about this a couple of years ago. Apparently there is a rights issue regarding all of the earlier episodes. The author of the article concluded by saying they doubted the earlier episodes would ever be released on DVD.

reply

Well, that's disappointing!

reply

Yes it is disappointing. In the UK there are lots of the later non-Wexford stories which have been released on DVD, also Simisola, Road Rage and Harm Done which were the last three Wexford stories made. But sadly nothing from the series from 1987 to 1992 when the bulk of the Wexford stories were adapted.

Movie girl: About 10 years ago I purchased about 20 of the Wexfords in a bookshop in CA. They are all on VHS and are watchable still. Too bad they will not be on DVD.

I do like Wexford better of any of Ruth's characters. Sadly, we lost both Ruth and P.D. James, 2 marvelous mystery writers recently. Their wonderful works will live on.

Uhhhh, George Baker's death may have had a small role in that.

reply

Movie girl: So sad about George. Yes, that may have something to do with the fact that the stories are not on professional DVDs. I have always liked George and Christopher Ravenscroft, his great sidekick; Inspector Burden.

I have them all on DVD. Long 150 min versions, shorter 100 min versions of the same episodes. Have them all.
