Question about Lizzie Quinn (SPOILERS)

I have a bit of a problem with Lizzie Quinn (the town witch), threatening to call the lotto on the town to collect the 10% for turning the town in for fraud. Yes, I'm sure they would have probably paid it, but I doubt that the lottery folks would have put the entire town in prison. It would be more likely that they would figure out who planned the scheme, put them in prison, made the rest of them pay fines and put them on some kind of probation. I could be wrong here, but I just see prison for all as unlikely. Even if they did all go to prison, Lizzie would still face a problem. She says she wanted to live there alone, but she would have a huge problem. She would have a lot of money, but NO ONE living in that village, prior to that or anyone to move in there would ever be willing to do business with someone who stabbed the neighbors in the back like that. That means, no one would sell her food, no one would give her medical services, vet services, no one would fix her toaster. She would never be able to show up at church. How do you buy food if no one will sell it to you? She would have to move far away where no one knows her or has heard of her, and she is old and feeble, so moving would be difficult for her. Am I over thinking this?

Good points, Macgirl. I don't think Lizzie thought it out all the way through, but the pastor turning the phone box into a flying TARDIS made all of this moot.

reply

Flying TARDIS, lol!

The logical assumption was that she'd simply leave the village with her big money. Her home was in bad shape and unkempt...more reason to pick up and move with her over $1.1 million - 10% in today's US dollars.

reply

Yes, I suppose logically that would have been her plan. Although, I still believe the story of how she got the money would have been hard to hide, and she would not have been able (or have wished to) move far enough away where people would have welcomed her or even tolerated her. Maybe a large city?

You are right. They wouldnt arrest the entire town because that would be ridiculous. Most of them were just going along with the plan that was laid out to them.

She probably got a little carried away with her threats, but she can still shut down the whole thing easily with one call. Even if they don't go crazy arresting everyone, they are still going to deny them the payout.

reply

Was that the regular priest returning home when he sent the phone box sailing off the cliff? I think there was a substitute priest who went along with the muse. The real resident priest might not have been willing to commit fraud.

The real resident priest might not have been willing to commit fraud.

They covered that in the movie; the visiting priest thought that as long as they gave the church some, the priest would have been OK with it.
