can anyone name another film like this(except for beetlejuice)? films with characters going to weird afterlife/purgatory-like places?

Well, one person mentioned "Freaked," and while it doesn't have the underworld in it, it still has weird hellish places/situations. You might want to check out "Barton Fink," although it's much more subtle than these other two.

Also, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," the sequel to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."

It's not a dark film at all but the movie Defending Your Life brings up some cool ideas.
