Why wasn't Sajid cicumsised at birth?

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but normally in Muslim families the boys are usually circumsised within the first few weeks after birth (probabaly based on the fact that they will not be able to remeebr the pain in later years). However, in the film, Sajid is only circumsised when the teacher from the local Mosque notices that Sajid hasn't been circumsised. Hence the question must be asked as to why the parents overlooked this fact for so long (about 8 years??????!!!!!, especially since it is such a common tradition amongst Muslim families.

reply

it is usually asked for my the mother after the child has given birth. i guess the mother didnt want Sajid to be circumsized. she didnt think it was necessaery. hence, when the father later said "this is all your fault" or something like that.

"You shut your mouth when you're talking to me!"

reply

its not asked in the uk usually, as its not routine on the nhs.

reply

Correct, plus the mother probably put her foot down after the daughter was born and decided the practice wasn't necessary since her kids were really british citizens.

reply

There is no rule when do circumcision in Islam. So in some country it is done on eight day after bird, in other (Balkan, Turkey) when boy have 3 to 5 years, but in some countries get circumcised when they become teenagers.

reply

For comic relief so people can laugh at a minority a little bit more and the screenplay writer and director can make more money.

reply

The writer is a member of that minority, moron.

reply

Yes and he is exploiting his position as a minority like many minority members do.

reply

I KNOW!!!

This was one of the things in the movie that showed the hypocrisy of the father and made me wanna slap his face off...:-)

I mean, the guy acts like a great muslim and yet he doesnt care enough about his kids to get him circumsized at the right age!!! And then he blames the wife. I think that in a situation like that, he shouldnt have made the kid get a circumsision, but should had rather have left it up to the kid to decide when he was old enough.

"If at first you don't succeed, cheat, repeat until caught, and then lie!"

reply

Yeah that's exactly why he wasn't. So people at home can treat it like a soap opera and come to delusional conclusions about the scene.

Very good.

I stick by my comic relief explanation.

reply

Circumcision has to be done before the boy reaches the age of puberty according to Islamic Law.

reply

Maybe they weren't being selfish and waiting until he at least had a mouth of his own unlike people who do it to unconsenting babies

reply

Jewish Boys are circumcised just after they're born.

In Islam circumcision is done later and is regarded as part of the transition from boyhood to manhood.

What it was was, he had been done, The Mother even says it, probably just not done well.

reply

i'm from south east asia. i was born muslim, and only circumcised at 9, my brothers at 8.

it's not a requirement to be circumcised at birth or within a few weeks of birth. it was just easier and less traumatizing for the baby. different cultures, different ways ;).

reply

[deleted]

Everyone I know is not circumsised and they aren't riddled with disease and if your not looking or touching their "bits" then why do you care?!

reply

Actually I think the tradition is to circumcise later on, cutting at birth is just to reduce trauma.
In Southeast Asia, boys are often cut at 10 or 11.

At first, I was thinking that she told the people at the hospital and somehow it didn't happen, but she would have noticed that the first time she changed his diaper. Maybe she just hid the fact that the hospital messed up from her husband. It's not like he's the most patient or understanding person.
