didn't get the 'chase scene', please help (SPOILERS)

Near the beginning, after Claude Montgomery (Billy Bob Thornton) – peeved at his mother-in-law for goading him – gets out of the car, a fat guy drives up, steps out of his vehicle, stares at Claude like a prospective rapist and then proceeds to chase him; next thing we see is Claude arriving at a bar, behaving as if nothing ever happened... – what the hell was that all about?

(sorry if it's a stupid question and I just didn't pay close enough attention, but I can't for the life of me make sense of that scene)

I guess Claude's frustrated because he has to walk the rest of the way, he picks up a small rock, and throws it away, not noticing the car behind him.
The rock hits the car and the driver stops, gets out of the car, and after looking at each other the "fat guy" begins chasing Claude.

Hey, Maety, thanks a bunch. That makes sense. Stupid me, didn't even notice the rock throwing... [turns away happily: embarrassed, but a bit less ignorant!]
