What a Gem.

I've never laughed so much in my life. Billy Bob with yet another Classic!

And Laura Dern, what a Fantastic performance!

Why is everyone saying this movie is funny? Its agreat movie, but I didnt laugh anywhere in the movie. It seemed pretty serious to me.

Some days its just not worth trying to chew through your restraints.

I agree with you, loraedavis. I found it mildly amusing at times, but for the most part, it was just sort of sad. IMO, the characters were not dysfunctional in a screwball, funny way, but rather in a quite sad, serious, and often pathetic way.

To classify this as a comedy is just wrong.

Or maybe you are twisted enough, in just the right way, to invent humor that isn't really there at all... or to find humor in situations that conscience should tell us are too sad to be funny.

I understand DARK humor. I understand satire. If this movie had been a better film, it may have contained these elements. As it is, the characters are just pathetic, and I don't find that even darkly funny or satirical.

Some people will laugh at anything. Some people can't laugh at anything. And then there are those who find train wrecks hilarious. This film is a train wreck.

It was about a typical American family. Finally a film about normal people in normal situations.

Couldn't agree more! This is literally in my top 5 movies of all time!! The way it reminds me of where I'm from is just excellent.

I'm gonna take a wild guess; Phreebyrd and loreadavis, y'all aren't from the South are you? No offense, but I think if one grew up in this kind of melieu you might appreciate the dark humor and satire in this little gem of a film. I howled with laughter, and what's more I actually liked John Prine's performance as well. Good soundtrack too.

Andy Griffith was funny as hell too. "I gotta get me some sleep. Y'all do me a favor and stay off them cars tonight."

Hilarious!

"Stick with me baby, and you'll be fartin' thru silk."

I agree with Count-Suckula. Growing up in the south in a small hick town I saw a lot of things in this movie I could identify with. I thought it was hilarious. Andy Griffith kept me laughing in every scene he was in.

A lot of BB's material is dark comedy/humor. Sling Blade switches between humor (ex: band scenes, mustard/biscuits) and really dark drama (karl talking about his brother). That movie was great. I had no idea he did this film, especially with Andy G and Jim Varney as brothers.

Everything came together for Sling Blade - writing, acting, setting, score, etc. Watching this on IFC and looking here, first it seems the score isn't quite matching the tone of the scenes. The theatrical poster looks ridiculous, like your run of the mill love triangle rom-com. I wish he would have used some of his SB actors on this. They played small townsfolk more convincingly natural/real than these stars.

But like you say, all these commercial breaks on IFC take you out of it.

In Spite of Ourselves, which was written/performed by John Prine, became one of my all time favorite ditties after watching this the first time. I fu- ckin love that song and Im curious to know if he wrote it for the film.

It was like a trip home for the holidays, a death in the family, somebody's birthday, or you fill in the blank. If you are from Arkansas, this film probably resonated deeply. I know it did for me. Maybe it is framed as an Arkansas thing, but I think it is a deeply human movie. Loved it!

It's woefully underrated on IMDb but it's rated by critics at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Apparently most of the people who voted on IMDb don't understand the dark dry humor and fail to recognize the exceptional writing and acting.

Who am I kiddin' who am I foolin' when they be like "What's up Fatlip?" and I say "Coolin'."

I thought it was the funniest movie I love it!

It's a testament to just how worthless IMDb is for rating.
