So what was Bones doin before he died?

One of the tag lines was he was comming back to "clean up the streets" but he dressed like a pimp, had a switchblade knife and a long pinky nail. He rode around in a Caddy... what did he do before he was killed? They kinda showed him as a respected member of the comunity and they talked about a lottery he did but why was he meeting with drug dealers when he was killed? Why did he always carry a switchblade if he was a "respected member of the community"? Also why did he have a driver with a gun if he wasnt up to something wrong?

Old post I know, but will give my insight nevertheless. Maybe he carried a knife and had his driver armed cause the hood he was in was not the best one and he needed it for protection? Just cause you have a switchblade over any other kind of knife does not mean you are bad. I have four of them does that make me a criminal? Nope.

Not saying bones was not a bad guy, just saying that the few things you stated do not automatically make someone bad.

Is there a chemical in X that makes you dance like a prick?

Just owning a switchblade is illegal in a lot of places included most of USA, Canada, UK, Australia, so depending on where you live having four of them may make you a criminal. For me I've got three in an area where possession is illegal so it does make me a criminal, not that I'm doing any further criminal activity with them.

Nitpicking here: that wasn't a switchblade, it was a balisong, or butterfly knife. Butterfly knives are legal in some jurisdictions where automatic knives (switchblades) are not.

swinging a switchblade around in the back of a car most likely= criminal

Seconding the poster who said it was a butterfly knife and not a switchblade.

Also, the illegal kind of "switch blade" is the kind that pushes out of the handle, aka a pig sticker.

"Switchblades" that swing out of the handle are perfectly legal. I own one. A Benchmade Auto Stryker. Pretty handy knife to own IMO.

And you claim to be the country of freedom but you can't carry a switchblade without being arrested. Hmpf...

Jimmy Bones was a great man. He was NOT a pimp! He was a legitimate business man who looked after the neighbourhood. Him and his associates only killed their own kind, and they was nice to their Mum, God bless them. He carried a knife because he was addicted to mangoes - how else was he supposed to pick the flesh from his favourite fruit? Shame it got the better of him in the end though - RIP Jimmy.

Gee, lucky its just a movie huh?

I figured he was a hustler, drug dealer, whatever but he was the type that conducted his business honestly and didn't hurt anybody outside of protection (are you honestly going to roll through the hood flashing with no protection?)

He came back to "clean the streets" of the people that did him wrong and were continuing to destroy the community (notice the difference from when he was around and the current day).

Sure he wasn't a squeaky clean Tom Hanks type of character, he was the definition of a "anti-hero"

or maybe not, lol http://www.amazon.com/Horror-Rock-Stories-Hendrix-ebook/dp/B004HFRKLG

It seems weird to me that folks had so much problem understanding the film, but that's probably one of the reasons it has a ridiculously low score here.

If you miss this aspect of the film you basically miss the meat of the plot.

Bones ran numbers--basically an illegal lottery (just because of the illegality of gambling) . Numbers were popular prior to most states deciding that gambling wasn't so bad that official state lotteries wouldn't be a good idea.

During the crucial meeting in the film's interleaved backstory, they were trying to convince Bones to get into the drug business instead. Bones didn't want anything to do with drugs though. He cared about his community and the people in it. He didn't want to leave the community. He didn't want to see his friends and neighbors' lives screwed up by drugs. A major idea was that Bones was a good guy, despite stereotypical assumptions that people might make based on appearances.

Bones is only evil when he comes back from the dead with vengeance on his mind after so many had betrayed him.
