found the italian horror references suprising

I liked this film more than I expected, but I found the plethora of classic italian horror references, suprising, and unexpected. With all the maggots, regenerated flesh, and abundant gore, I thought it seemed like a black cast remake of "Hellraiser", as directed by Lucio Fulci! Snoop does a very good job, and I hope we get him in more horror. His romantic scenes with Pam Grier look like something he's been dreaming of since he was a kid and saw "Foxy Brown" for the first time. Starring in a blaxploitation horror film with Ms. Grier, has to be a true sign of success.

Agreed Rap & Horror is an unbeatle combination.

In most scenes, those maggots looked like rice. Hard to take seriously or be too freaked out.

>>Oh, well that's different. Nevermind!<<

Lmfao The maggots looked like ricee..wow but when they upclosed on em' they didnt =)

The maggots looked like rice??? what kind of thing is that to say dude? I'm swearing of rice for a while...

I'm okay with people saying maggots in movies look like rice. I saw The Lost Boys (remember that scene with the chinese food?) years before I saw Fulci's City of the Living Dead or Dario Argento's immortal Suspiria.

They doidn't use real maggots because they bite.

reply

Maggots don't bite. I fish with them all the time, and I have often carried several of them inside my lip. I think if they were gonna bite me, they would have.

reply

Actually on the commentary they do say that the close-up shots are real maggots.

There were definitely some maggots. But they were mixed within the rice. I saw both.

I too found this surprising. I picked up this movie in the "bargain bin" but was very surprised at all the references and as it turns out I really love this movie!!!!!!!!

The ending is still retarded though....

I found 'Bones' to be a off-shoot of a 1972 Mario Bava horror film titled 'Baron Blood' (aka: Gli orrori del castello di Norimberga) (1972). Not only was the story similar to 'Baron Blood' about a murdered and powerful man returning from the dead to exact his revenge (Jimmy Bones even wears the same style floppy hat and black cape as Baron Blood), but also the use of color from the purple, green, and red lighting in many scenes which make the movie more surreal and gives it that comic-book like surreal quality to it.

The movie actually reminded me of "The Evil Dead" more than anything else, with the speedy demon POV and the sounds it would make. But yeah I also did like the spaghetti horror references, ie the ceiling maggots (definate Suspiria) and the killer dog (The Beyond).

In the behind-the-scenes/'making of' footage they mention a certain music video that I don't think was actually referred to in the movie but they mention it because it has certain "old time-y" imagery compleat with a rich, dark sepia filter. They actually showed a brief sample of it too. It's a music video that also stars Mr. Dogg. In fact, the sample they show is of Snoop in a trench coat walking against heavy wind holding his hat on his head.

What's this music video they talk about?

I think it might have "California" in the title. It was by at least two different rappers (i.e. So&So --'featuring'-- So&So).
