Chinese/Black romance

This will be probably one of the rare times, in fact maybe the only time, we will see a Chinese male/Black Female pairing in the movies.

Opinions on the racial part of the romance.

Hi... you may be right, that this movie shows us one of a few opportunities that Afro and Asian people may be an "item".
There is one movie that I remember, where this contstellation appears, which is "One night stand" with Wesley Snipes and Ming-Na http://www.imdb.com /title/tt0119832/com bined.
Happy Easter...

ya, i didn't thought aaliyah and jet li match and click in the film, but that was for sure not because of them being chinese and black respectively. in fact, i have a chinese friend whose wife is black, and their daughter is really cute and adorable :)

There's another movie that shows Chinese/Black Romance.
Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella(1997), the comedy musical.

Oh, yeah. In Cinderella they did have an Asian/Black romance. The prince was pretty tall for a Filippino. Anyway, I loved how Romeo Must Die had such diversity. Great movie.
Rest in peace, Aaliyah. :'(

Once you go Asian, you never go Caucasian. =)

LOL!

i loved that it had an asian/black romance, most movies dont have that which i think is a rly sad thing. aaliyah and jet li had rly good chemistry in my opinion, so why was there never a love scene? or even a kiss its almost romeo nd juliet so im just wondering why that wasnt in the movie...

reply

Yeah, the shoudl've kissed, at least a light tap to the lips or something, it didn't had to be French...

Forget Chinese male/Black female, JUST ANY non-black male coupling with Black female is rare.

I agree with the above poster. I would love to see more pairings like this in film with more intimacy between the characters. If we do see it, it'll probably be an obscure indie film. But at least that'll be something!

reply

What is wrong with you people? Most of you have completely ignored the fact that the original poster's emphasis was on Chinese male/Black Female pairings. The opposite pairing is hardly as rare as some of you are trying to make it. Wesley Snipes alone has had several onscreen romances with Asian women.

Back in 1975, Sidney Poitier and Persis Khambetta had a sex scene in the movie The Wilby Conspiracy and that was rare to show it in the American movie theaters let alone on TV.

I guess we're just gonna have to make our own flicks.

My ex-boyfriend is Chinese.

I just like to shake things up a bit...

Romeo Must Die might be one of the rare films with black woman/asian male relationships but it isn't the only one Catfish In Black Bean Sauce and Fakin Da Funk are two others that I can think of.

reply

Don't forget Cinderella with Brady a few years ago. The actor was Filipino.

I was a bit disappointed in this movie because I did not feel there was any romance between Jet Li's and Aaliyah's characters. It seems like something was holding them back. I thought it would have been interesting to see a Black female/Asian male interracial romance in a movie, but I guess that day has not come yet...

reply

^ I agree. I remember seeing previews for the movie and Aaliyah's video "Try Again" and thinking "Ok, they're love interests", but when I saw the movie they seemed more like just good friends to me.

apparently, there was supposed to be a kissing scene (which is logical, since the way it was release, the characters never seem to be more than casual friends, strange take on romeo and julliet). this was cut however because blacks and asians alike did not like seeing it. considering this movie is from the 90's, its strange that racism could still be so up front. however it doesnt bother me, as its not these people fault they only have half a brain. racist people are too dumb to understand the concept of getting along and not being retarded.

Its from the 2000s...

I think that's because Jet Li is very rarely, if not ever, had a romantic kiss in a movie, even with female Asian in his previous Hong Kong productions. So maybe the worldwide audience would feel awkward when he suddenly do that in his movies.
