I think you missed the son's point. The car wasn't for him, his dad was fulfilling his own fantasy. Red was his favorite color, not the son's.

If my dad gave me a car he wanted (or he'd wanted when he was my age), it'd just mean he spent a fortune without caring enough to ask me what I'd like.

The protagonist has a point. His dad just want him to be Daniel 2.0, no regard for his actual person.
