Kinda harsh on the mother?

The movie doesn't show any sort of reconciliation between the son and the mother, so we might presume that they become estranged or something.

Isn't that sort of harsh?

The mother wasn't pointedly villainous; she merely wanted to raise her son in the way she found proper.

A better ending would have been the mother's learning to accept KISS.
