Great film but slightly too exaggerated

I think this film would have been better if they made the main character more restrained. IMO a smart criminal coming out of years of prison should have learned some self-control. This guy's actions are too impulsive. I understand that in a foreign environment, under pressure, most people would be very nervous and make mistakes, but aren't nervous people usually over-cautious rather than under-cautious?

Other than that, the intensity and camera work was a joy to watch.

He was very restrained in his own fantasy version of the events (the voice-over). The viewer notices how panicky he really is.

He's very nervous and sloppy. He was operating purely through his id, his ego was out of control and his super ego was non-existent. I think it was accurate and convincing.

Did you just do an undergrad in Psych? ;)

Haha, no. But I read a lot of Psychology.

The super ego was very present in the form of an internal sadist that he projected outwards.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.

The events are quite close to the actual case of Werner Kniesek

including details, like forcing the mother to take her pills so she could experience her death more consciously.
And he did commit the crime just after he was released in January 1980.
The difference is he wasn't apprehended because of a car crash, the family had written him a check thinking it was a robbery, when he tried to spend that people became suspicious. Also because he was eating with black leather gloves.

In addition to following the real-life case, I think the filmmakers were simply trying to portray him as a psychotic psychopath, which is different from just a regular (non-psychotic) psychopath. One of the alternate titles for the film is "Schizophrenia," which suggests that the main character was supposed to be schizophrenic/psychotic. Generally speaking, psychotic killers tend to have a lower IQ than non-psychotic killers, and they also tend to be much more impulsive and disorganized when committing their crimes.

And unlike what some of the other posters suggested, the way that the main character acts has nothing to do with his id, ego, or superego. He simply acted the way that he did because he is a schizophrenic psychopath.
