if you like 'angst'
... then go also for "funny games (1997)"!
CU
I like Angst and I like Funny Games.
I don't see much relation between the two though..
The closest movies to Angst are Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer and I Stand Alone.
Both good films, but nothing compared to Angst.

I've never seen I Stand Alone. I'll have to check it out..

I Stand Alone's director, Gaspar Noe, was highly influenced by Angst. Though the camera work in I Stand Alone seems a bit more 'still' than in Angst, the camera work in Gaspar Noe's next film Irreversible borrowed heavily from this movie.
But I Stand Alone is the chronicle of a portion in the life of a disturbed man as he narrates like in Angst.
It is quite brilliant, I would seriously check it out. Though if you havent seen Irreversible yet then also check that out. It's not a serial killer movie, but its one heck of a powerful film and probably an improvement in quality to I Stand Alone.
I might be alone here in thinking this. But when I saw Angst it reminded me greatly of the first time I ever saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Both are movies that, on paper, seem to say very little....but at the same time say more about violence then nearly any other horror movies.

I should have I Stand Alone in a couple of days. I have Irreversible and it is great! Can't wait to watch I Stand Alone..
They are connected :)

I definitely saw and sensed a lot of "Noe" in this. The Butcher would understand where the guy's coming from.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned "Man Bites Dog" (original title "C'est arrivé près de chez vous", 1992), wich is probably one of the closest film to "Angst" and "Henry portrait..." and it's even more disturbing. A must see indeed, if you like this kind of movies.

I prefer angstWhen there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...
Funny Games is *beep* *beep* Haneke is a moralizing sheep-twerp.
shareNah. I'd seen both Funny Games before (both the same as each other). Didn't care for them at all.
Also, as another poster below says, Maniac isn't that good.
I'm checking out the August Undergrounds instead.
prepare to be dissapointed

Next to Henry and Seul Contre Tous, Alan Clarke's Elephant and Die Zärtlichkeit der Wölfe. In bleakness, the very distant Der Totmacher. The Latter is basically the voice-over from Angst without the gruesome images. Please watch it in German to experience Götz George's performance in full.
Chaos reigns
I recommend Schramm, and A Serbian Film. Those images will get stuck in your head for days.
