Constantly impressive Show

9 great seasons, one of the few sitcoms to stay that good without getting boring or bad. Impressive, TBBT got horrible after 5 seasons, also Modern Family and 2 and a half Men. I loved Rules of Engagement, but it had only 7 very short seasons, so i guess The King of Queens will forever be my favorite.
Or is there any other sitcom that lasted long but stayed good????

Personally, I feel "Cheers" got better starting with season 6.

I was about to ask what TBBT was, but I'm guessing it's The Big Bang Theory?
(Here's a tip: Don't abbreviate titles when you first mention them. It causes confusion.)

I would vote for Coach, with Craig T. Nelson.

It certainly declined a little in the later seasons, but it was overall a great show. It lasted nine seasons.

The Golden Girls also held up well, for seven seasons.

reply

Empty Nest also held up for seven seasons.

It was never "quite the same" after Kristy McNichol left. But, still a great -- and long-running -- show.

Trivia: The guy who sang the opening theme song for The King of Queens ("Baby, All My Life I Will Be Driving Home to You") also sang the opening theme song for Empty Nest ("Life Goes On")!

Two very decent theme songs, especially "Life Goes On".

I like King of Queens and Everybody Loves Raymond. I haven't found any others that I enjoy. :/

In general, I agree.

Interesting point: one of the "weakest" guest actors/performances was actually Ray Romano, of all people.

They probably all figured that they would capitalize on his name and his fame, and -- as a result -- that a good performance or good writing was not particularly necessary.

Yes!

That was the point I was making in my last posting.

Romano came in like he was some "big shot" or like he was the best thing (best comedian) since sliced bread.

Due to this ego and attitude, they all assumed that there was no need for good writing or good acting in Romano's episodes. Romano's name and presence alone would carry the day, or so they thought.

I think it was overconfidence. And a failure.

Thus, the episodes with Ray Romano tend to be among the weaker ones in the series.

I believe he appeared like 5 or 6 times.

That's part of Ray Barone's character, however.

Which probably coincides with Ray Romano's personality, also.

The King of Queens is literally constantly played on Comedy Central for years now. From first episode to last and then again, from start. I can't get tired of it. It never hurts to watch episodes once more. That is how good it is.
I must admit I did not expect it. I was thinking "here is another fat guy-hot dumb wife" tv show like that horrible "According to Jim" crap. Luckily, this was different. It works. My favourite is of course, Arthur. He is the star.

reply

Arthur is good, indeed.

But he is not a star. He is "merely" a support.

But, no doubt, an excellent one at that.

He does tend to steal the show or steal the scenes in which he appears.

We are lucky that the writers used his character somewhat sparingly.

It was a wise decision.

@Biba_yu .. King of queens on comedy central? .. Maybe you meant meant TV land or TBS. KOQ is never on Comedy Central.

But in response to the OP, shows that stayed great throughout the whole season? ...to me, not even my favorite sitcom Seinfeld was as strong as it was in its first 6 seasons after Larry David left after the 7th season.. just wasnt the same. KOQ also didn't have the feel after the 5th-6th season. I think Friends, Frasier ,Roseanne & Raymond are some sitcoms that did keep the familiar vibe throughout the series.

reply

Rules of Engagement stayed strong all 100 episodes.

reply

Yes, but 100 episodes is a lot less than 200+ episodes of more successful (i.e., longer-lasting) sitcoms.
