Everybody got the right episode this time, right? After all, there's only one to choose from.

They showed this snow globes scene supposedly so we could relate to Stone wanting to buy a snow globe for his widow. But it would've been nice knowing why those globes were important to her to begin with.

Amusing: the Devil is not an equal-opportunity employer:
"I don't hire the handicapped."

I wonder how old Stone was when he died. IMDB says Peter Horton's from 1953. Dying in 1983 makes Stone 30, but Horton was 45 the time the episode was shot (even though he looked younger). Depending on how old he was, that would give Max a very different idea when Stone said he loved a woman 15 years before, as he could be between 15 and 30 when that love happened.

Well, well, OBVIOUSLY she had a boyfriend. Duh! I'm surprised Rosalyn wasn't already remarried and with children. And a dog and a cat.

For a moment I thought Zeke and Max were going to kiss. That would've been wrong and inappropriate.

Nice morphing trick, Ash. I didn't expect that. Actually I didn't know you had that kind of power. Cool, but kind of arbitrary.

The Devil with a gimongous Valentine heart. I wonder who's the "lucky" lady.

And what was in max's boyfriend's heart box anyway? We'll never know.

Well, well, this episode gave us all the fulfilling pleasure of an incomplete orgasm. In other words, in some ways it was frustrating, even though Stone made the logic decision after all. Personally, I would've spent less time musing and pondering, and would've talked to her much sooner.

So, the Devil was right? How can that be? Ash was already dating Roz, long before Zeke finally decided to meet her again. In fact it was his intervention that saved her. If anything, he should be around her because the way things are now, she's an easy prey to any escapee with a grudge and some accurate information about Stone.

"I deny myself love because that puts my loved ones in danger" can best be described as the old Superhero Complex. I always found it so lame and uninteresting, and I think it broke the mold (for the better) in moments like when Superman married Lois Lane and life went on. I don't agree the hero becomes more interesting by denying himself love. But I obviously draw the line when it comes to the dead building a marital relationship with the living. Still, I wouldn't have denied myself that chance.

Obviously this episode wasn't supposed to be the series ending. Ash would still be around for a few more encounters until finally caught and sent back downstairs. Stone and Roz were destined to meet again, But of course the writers were thinking of more than just 13 episodes.

The episode was too slow. Too much thinking, too much commiserating over drinks, too much digging oneself out of a hole (metaphorically and literally). Only the ending was exciting. It left us with a frustrating feeling in the end.

But the series as a whole was a winner. I'm very glad we chose it. Perhaps it insisted too much on a formula, but come on, it was just the first 13 episodes. In order to break the mold, a show first has to establish what the mold is. Fringe's first season was practically entirely about standalone X-Files-esque cases, but then in seasons 2 and 3 it reached greatness. We never really know how this could've developed. I have very good feelings it would've been great.

Perhaps it was too dark and depressing for the average audience in the 1990s. It's hard to say really. But it was much deeper than most supernatural shows I've seen. Perhaps a little humor would've made it more appealing. This is why Reaper (2007) lasted longer, though perhaps they overdid with the humor, as Reaper was also cancelled in a cliffhanger, though in its second season and after 31 episodes.

So, the episode gets 6 snow globes, but the show (as it is; with proper development it would've gotten more) gets 8 damned souls sent back to Hell.

I wonder how old Stone was when he died.

He was 38 years, 2 months and 25 days old, give or take a day. It was on his tombstone last week.

So now that Stone has found Rosalyn, the next logical step is stalking her. (Is it stalking if it’s your own wife or widow?) He recalls a scene from their early days when he discovered her love of sno-globes and got an ass-kicking he really enjoyed! But when he tries to get closer to her at home he encounters a big snake (well, two if you count the Devil. Har-har).

He goes back to the hotel and gets some advice on love from everyone’s favorite desk clerk , who’s sure that no woman would ever forget him – even after 15 years. He goes back to the house only to meet – the boyfriend. He identifies himself as Detective John Gonner (pronounced “goner” – a definite in-joke), and finds out Roz has only recently hooked up with Barry. He has some hope until he returns the next night and sees them starting to make love. He realizes it’s time to get back to his job of sending back souls. He traces the snake and all roads lead back to Barry, who appears to be planting snakes in houses to buy up real estate – even the house across the street from Roz. He goes to investigate but instead gets buried in a cellar by Barry. (Kind of a weak set-up visually, but I guess it's hard to convey being completely buried in dirt.) At least he just tried to take the guy out this time. No “sorry, but I’m sending you back to Hell” speech.

Meanwhile Barry goes upstairs to morph into Ash! When I first saw this episode, it came as no surprise to me at all – no sir, I saw it coming 100%. Keen deductive work? No. Those knotheads at FOX has shown the scene of Barry morphing into Ash in the preview for this week’s episode. Nice one, people. It’s not like anybody should get surprised, right?

Stone manages to dig his way up to the yard and crawl out. In the meantime, Rosalyn gets a shock when Barry turns into Ash in front of her and then clocks her, after telling her she wants to break Zeke’s heart like he broke hers. She starts painting her face for a sacrifice when Stone bursts in. He’s figured out Barry was Ash by “too many snakes.” (Ash’s goddess Ashura was the Serpent Queen.) Ash wants to turn herself into Rosalyn so that Stone can have Roz and she can have Stone. (I’m not quite clear why she couldn’t just morph into Roz, but never mind.) Stone tells her there is no “us” anymore and Ash flees the scene. Stone isn’t fast enough to take her out before she turns into smoke and blows away.

Roz is still unconscious as Zeke tells her she almost died because of him, and he can’t risk that again. He leaves her a sno-globe with a married couple and a banner reading “Forever” and then leaves. He runs into the Devil who says if it makes a difference, he sorry – well, sort of – Naah, he’s not sorry. Roz almost sees him as she comes to the front door, but a garbage truck drives in front of Stone and he hops on and escapes. Roz opens the package, sees the sno-globe and bursts into tears. Stone rides off into the night, looking pensive and sad. And on that note, the series comes to a close.

So another change-of-pace episode – not as good as the last one, but interesting. Stone comes so close to connecting with Roz, but just keeps missing. Now, he’s probably really sorry he didn’t take Ash out the first time. Kudos to casting Mark Valley as Ash’s alter ego. He used to be on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which my wife and I used to watch and I got to like him. I’ve seen most of the series he’s been in, (HUMAN TARGET probably being the best one) but nothing ever seemed to really click for him on a permanent basis. I’m sure we’d have seen more of Ash in the future – she might have been Stone's Wo Fat (the original HAWAII FIVE-O), the one he’d always come close to catching but not quite. No one went back to Hell, so he didn’t even get to bring his total down to 100, let alone double-digits. Pity.

Well, that’s it for my review. I’ll have a deleted scene for you, and some thoughts about whether Stone finished his quest in a later post.

What a bummer! It looks like we have to start avoiding synopses, previews, trailers of all sorts. The latest trend is the trailer of a new show that, in two or three minutes, tells everything about the pilot, ruining it.

By the way, Ash: from police detective, to Stone's lover, to church destroyer, to rival boyfriend, to cheating real estate agent, to snake charmer, to freaking Martian Manhunter, to Ninja master in disappearance act. Is there anything the character would NOT do for the convenience of the writers?

He was in the beginning of Fringe (2008), but unfortunately is out right in the beginning. I wish he had stayed as a regular. I also recommend the amazing Keen Eddie (2003), which unfortunately got cancelled. Hey, that's one show we could watch here. I might include it in the suggestions when we vote in a few days. Perhaps would bridge you out of your Brimstone comfort zone into other shows with us?

I was thinking of Stone's Moriarty. Yes, I'm more of a classic literature man myself. (Ha, ha, so not that!)

Yes, I had seen both of those shows. I got all of "Keen Eddie" off SLEUTH TV. I was grateful that they ran all of them in proper sequence, something FOX, Bravo and even the DVD release, failed to do. My only regret is that I recorded them on my old DVD-R, which had no closed-captioning. And that would have come in handy on this fast-talking, full-of-British-slang show.

I had prepared a note saying I probably would not have time to do this again, but it really has been a lot of fun. I'll definitely pitch some ideas, see which new show you pick next and see if I can somehow find time to join in.

Here’s another deleted scene for you. This one occurs after Zeke sees the snakes in the elevator, but before Barry and Roz make love for the first time. The scene was cut strictly for time limitations.

(Barry Ceniza enters the dinner carrying a folder. He spots Zeke sitting alone in a booth, goes over to him and shakes hands, then sits down across from him.)
Barry: Ah, detective.
(He pulls some photos out of his folder, puts them on the table.)
Stone: Thanks for coming.
Barry: Don't worry about it. Potential commission. I've got some of your most recent listings here. Lots of nice places. A couple are right in the area where we met in. Now look at this Craftsman right here. Newly renovated. Price range...
Stone: (looking at photo) It's nice.
Barry: It's ten minutes away. You want to look at it, it's not a problem. This one here is uh...
Stone: Umh, I'm sorry. How's...what's her name...Mrs. Stone?
Barry: Rosalyn.
Stone: Rosalyn.
Barry: Oh yeah, Rosalyn's great. Yeah, wish you could've stayed last night.
Stone: Why?
Barry: You know Rosalyn. She just loves that...cop talk, you know.
Stone: Oh, yeah. Ex-husband.
Barry. Right, right. Late husband, actually. (Pauses, indicates picture) This is beautiful.
Stone: You hungry? Want something to eat?
Barry: Oh, no...coffee.
Stone: Oh, yeah. (signals to waitress passing by) Could you get him some coffee please?
(looks at menu) So, is it...is it strange?
Barry: What's that?
Stone: The uh...dead husband.
(Waitress sets coffee down. Walks off)
Stone: Uh...I'm sorry. It's none of my business.
Barry: No, no it's okay. (Pauses) It's funny. Actually, I've never talked about this to another person before. But I think she still...has something for him.
Stone: Really?
Barry: Well, you know at least for his...his memory. It's frustrating because Roz and I we had this...we just really fit well together, you know. (Interlocks his fingers for a moment to demonstrate)
Stone: Yeah, sure.
Barry: (after a pause) When you and your wife first...(laughs) How am I gonna say this? Uhm...when you were dating. Before you were married. Uhm...How long did it take before you actually..uh...slept together?
Stone: (long pause, looks mildly surprised) You and Roz haven't...haven't slept together?
Barry: No. It's like I'm going up against a legend. You know, even though she doesn't talk about him that much, I know she's still thinking about him.
Stone: (long pause) Well...Do you love her?
Barry: Yeah...Yeah, I love her.
Stone: Well...give it time.
(Barry's pager goes off. He looks at it.)
Barry: Damn. I'm gonna have to go.
Stone: Oh.
Barry: Hey, how'd you like to come over for dinner? Me, you and Roz later this week?
Stone. Oh, no...no thanks. (Pauses.)
(Barry gets up to leave.)
Stone: You know, I mean I'd like to, you know, I'd like to. It's just...it's a real busy week. A lot of paperwork down at the precinct.
Barry: (correcting him) Division.
Stone: Right. (Pause) Some other time?
Barry: I look forward to it.
Stone: Yeah, me too.
Barry: Take a look at those things.
Stone: I will.
Barry: Take care of yourself.
(Barry exits the diner.)

The two most significant things are that Stone learns Roz still remembers him, and that she and Barry haven’t slept together yet – both giving him some hope. Also, Barry’s correction of saying “Division” instead of “Precinct” was a clue to who he really was.

reply

by brimfin » Here’s another deleted scene for you.

That would've been interesting also because I hadn't related to the fact Barry was in real estate. So, hitting me in the head a little sometimes helps. Oh, and what's the difference between precinct and division?

Some last fun facts about the show: Initially, it was renewed for six more episodes, before FOX abruptly changed its mind. Ideas had been submitted (a episode where a reporter sees a soul taken out and traces it back – through an episode running backward; the Devil insists on tagging along on one of Stone’s trackdowns – a meek clerk-type whom the Devil could never break in Hell; an episode about a rogue angel who wants to experience the worst elements of humanity – like murder; one where Zeke has to hunt down a beloved uncle – who insists he was innocent, and Stone tries to clear him; and the season finale where Stone’s birthday party gets a surprise guest – Rosalyn! The first of those episodes, “Rivals”, where the Devil brings up a female soul from Hell to compete against Stone for the right to hunt down the remaining souls, had a full script and had started shooting. But only one scene was finished before the suits busted in and announced the show was closed down. The script is available at the “Virtual Brimstone” website if anyone wants to read it. Fuller descriptions of the last six episodes are also there, or at my website, or at John Glover’s website (it’s the same set of descriptions on all of them).

One bad piece of news especially for wicebtg, who said that Maxine was his favorite character. Even if the show had continued, they couldn’t offer Lori Petty enough money to stay around. She had been written out of “Rivals” and was to be have been replaced by Helen Slater as the new desk clerk later on. That was a bummer for me as well, as Maxine had a big part in my own stories on Zeke completing his quest. And using that as a segue:

Zeke’s Stone’s Quest

So, did Zeke Stone ultimately succeed in his quest to send back the 113 souls? On my website, yes he did. It happened over five seasons of 13 episodes each (including the ones we watched), the finale being a two-hour episode making 66 hours episodes in all – appropriate!

I probably wouldn’t have attempted my own little quest if not for the fact there had been a set number of escaped souls – 113 – and what the heck, 12 were already gone. I used a lot of partnerships, groups and gangs knocking off as many as 4 souls in one episode. Some of the souls were redshirts, someone Zeke could polish off while the main criminal escapes. Maxine took out two souls, a few others were taken out by other people, and occasionally a damned soul took out another damned soul. One voluntarily turned herself in and simply rode with the Devil in the elevator back to Hell rather than having her eyes taken out. But the lion’s share of soul send-backs were by good old Stone.

In the second season, he returned to New York to protect Roz. He was escorting Maxine who was going there to live near her sister, Amy, who was a cop and almost her polar opposite. Martin Benedict and Brian Reed were both given a second chance at life by God, and were sent to help Zeke in secret. Maxine stumbled across them, learned all, and also joined in to help.

As the third season opened, Stone revealed the truth about himself to Maxine, making her able to help him openly now. (Martin & Brian still had to remain secret). We also found out she was a secret computer geek, which gave Stone even more ammo against the damned souls brigade. At the end of season four through pure happenstance Maggie, the desk clerk at the NY hotel, ended up reuniting Rosalyn and Zeke.

The fifth season gave Zeke and Roz a few days of passion. But when a damned soul nearly burned down a huge building which would have killed dozens, Roz knew she had to step back and let Zeke finish his quest. When he got the count down to 13, the Devil tried to double-cross him. It seems that only 100 souls escaped in the mass escape. 13 had been secretly released by the Devil over a period of years to reek havoc on society. Having no desire to send them back, the Devil has one of his henchmen try to kill Zeke, but he is saved by Maxine’s sister, at the cost of her life. He and Maxine track down the remaining souls with the Devil trying to hinder instead of help and with Martin and Brian finally able to reveal themselves. Eventually, he gets all of them – the last one being Ash, after she blows up St. Peter’s Basilica and kidnaps the Pope. But along the way Roz dies of cancer, Maxine in a death trap set by Ash and even Maggie ends up brain dead after a car accident.

Just when all seems lost, the Angel arrives. It seems that God always knew about the Devil’s release of the damned souls from day one and had created an alternate Earth where the world continued as it should have without the damned soul interference. After the last of the damned souls were sent back, all the good people of Earth were deposited into the alternate world, while the baddies were left behind here. Further, all the damned souls were released from Hell where they and the baddies would wander the Earth for 1,000 years having one last chance at redemption. Stone and Maxine were sent to the alternate world. Brian was told he would be reborn as someone in that new universe. Martin volunteered to stay on Earth to try to win as many souls as he could to God. A glimpse into the future showed he would succeed and incredibly he would even save Ash’s soul.

The final scenes show Zeke and Roz celebrating their anniversary by having Amy introduce Roz to her favorite author – Maxine (pen name: T Max), who has written a series of novels about a cop from Heaven who returns to Earth to hunt down escaped damned souls and also reunite with his daughter, whom he died protecting. Zeke and Roz have three kids – Sarah, Max and Brian (yes, that Brian!). All of Stone’s other friends are happy too, and we see some of the people who lost family to the damned souls now instead happy in a world where the damned souls never visited. THE END.

I really liked the show BRIMSTONE appreciating it more on multiple viewings and in doing my storylines to finish his quest. It was a truly different show unlike anything else on TV.

I appreciate having the excuse to watch them again and to get your take on the individual episodes. You even did me a favor: I recorded the episodes on tapes a few years ago and wanted to convert them to DVDs. This gave me the incentive to do that, and watching the DVD copies for reviewing gave me a chance to check and make sure they were all glitch-free.

I was surprised to hear than for Madp, English wasn’t his first language. You’d never know that from his reviews. Statements like “Too much digging oneself out of a hole (metaphorically and literally)” make for great reading. I’ve enjoyed reading everyone’s reviews and extra thoughts and you’ve given me a fresh look at the best and worst elements of the show. I’ll keep an eye on your future endeavors and hopefully I can join you in reviewing some other show down the line. It was really worth taking the extra time to do this. I hope I helped make the experience a little better for all of you. Thanks again to everyone!

Well, Brimfin, it was certainly a pleasure reading your contributions, as they certainly increased our enjoyment with the show. It's a pity you'll probably won't go on, though. All I can do is throw in a Devil's deal: if you decide to stay, I'll include Keen Eddie among the suggestions and let the chips fall where they may, which means, we will vote next week. As for me, I'll go on of course. At least I have the excuse I need TV shows to keep my English updated.

About my command of the language, I appreciate what you've said. I'm an ESL teacher and a writer working in Porto Alegre, Brazil (way south), so this is what I do. I wrote a book (in Portuguese) called Malignant Connections (short stories dealing mostly with different aspects of demons, some humorous, some serious). But I have to admit when I write these posts I cheat: I have a regular dictionary, the urban dictionary and Google search tabs constantly open for research. I try to avoid mistakes if I can, and with moderate effort.

Thanks for telling us about your Brimstone writing efforts. But you didn't post a link! I might check that when I have the time. That reminds me of when I wrote a few Pushing Daisies (2007) fanfic stories, the longest being a crossover with Wonderfalls (2004), but I never ventured into a possible ending as I had always expected somehow, somewhere we would get to see the official version of the story's conclusion in some form. But that never happened. A also never got to coordinate the effort of several writers, being the lonely wolf I am.

Have a nice TV viewing and see you in the pages of IMDB or another website some time!

This Friday on “Brimstone” ep 13: “Mourning After”

Another one hit wonder is in the book. Just when I started to like the series it’s over the last few were really pretty good. I had this one figured out about when the second snake sighting took place but I didn’t have any idea about Ash returning for the season ending show. So Ash was really in love with Stone again had no idea that was going to happen. Stones widowed wife was still in love after all those years gone by it must have been good I kind of thought she might have a husband and few kids running around the house but no she was still waiting for Stone to return. Once they got away from killing one demon a week the show started to get better too bad it didn’t return for another season.

Wow, what a thud this one made as it crossed the finish line. Bad episode, long winded, drawn out, just to slow from start to finish. It was nice seeing Ash again but they completely screwed her character up and basically turned her into a giant puss. She was to supposed to have power over the heart, even to the point she got the jump on the devil but she couldn't do anything with Rosalind's heart? Sure they had 'fun' but when push came to shove she told the mighty ash to take a hike.....And for heavens sake, now Ash who was so intent on bringing the world to it's knees is so overwhelmed by Stone she is consumed on revenge? maybe but It just doesn't add up to me...boo on you Ash writers. One other thing...I thought the dead people couldn't bleed, didn't Ash cut her own hand when she was painting old Roz up? As for the Boyfriend, I knew he was a bad person because after the night of 'fun' she was looking at the picture of Stone and her, boyfriend saw it and never said a word about detective Gardner being the same person.......Ugh I was hoping for so much more and all I got was blah blah blah, I don't know how to write a season ending cliff hanger. Don't have much else to say. All in all bad way to end. I give this one 4 king cobras on the BS scale and Over All I give the series 7 Devils with candy. Adios Brimstone

Well, not a favorite, but it was a worthy season-ender. Awfully talky, a bit smarmy at times, but they did need to do something about Stone and his wife, and this was sort of a resolution. He's realized that it's best to keep his distance and not try to get back into her life. Bringing back Ash was a good move as well; she's clearly in it for probably the duration and I'd expect to see her showing up from time to time in future seasons, if there were any.

But still, the writing was sloppy. Too talky, and I agree with Charmed that it seemed weird that the boyfriend didn't recognize Stone from the photo. It made sense after we discovered that he was really Ash, but not when it happened. A hint of what was to come? Maybe, but not well done, in my opinion. The snake bit was not just overdone, it was unnecessary. And why did the Devil suddenly not seem to care that Stone was neglecting his assignment?

I'm not sure Ash was out for revenge so much as using Rosalyn to get to Stone, the only one who was a threat to her. If she can "become" Rosalyn and thereby get him to fall in love with her, then she's safe. Or at least she thinks. Her thinking may be a bit twisted, but 4000 years in Hell can do that, I suppose.

Idle thought: Why use a pistol, requiring two well-aimed shots to take out the eyes? Why not a shotgun blast to the face? One reasonably close shot, and you're done.

* * * * *All told, not a bad series. Considerably better than I expected going in, and a shame that it couldn't get the traction to continue. It really was starting to interest me towards the end. I'm not sure it could have sustained interest through all 113 souls, but maybe if he did get a few gangs, as Brimfin suggests, it would be possible.

Best line of the series: "If you don't have a warrant, get your pretty-boy white ass out of here." They really needed to make her a regular!

Hmmm you could be right, it certainly makes sense. My problem is they made her seem so needy like she couldn't live without Stone rather than trying to make it the other way around. Almost like they made her a characacher of herself. She just ceased to come across as the bad ass that duped the devil.

Well to me, in the big reveal episode where Ash turns into whoever, She was portrayed as one of the baddest of the bad of the escapees by virtue of having it insinuated that she masterminded the escape and by using her power over the heart she duped the Devil himself. In the last episode she appeared to me to be reduced to a silly female stereo type who couldn't get over Stone to the extent that she couldn't go on and do anything else but get even with Stone or win his heart or whatever. just wasn't believable to me...I don't know, just didn't like it. So much for her super power over the heart. And what was up with the blood when she cut her hand. I thought it was established that you could tell the demons from regular folk because regular folk bled and demons don't.
