Series 2 DVD

I bought Series 1 on DVD a while back, just wondering if there are plans to release Series 2 on DVD soon?

reply

I know they've got the 2nd season out on videos at ABC, but theres no info about its DVD release. Bummer. I loved the first season and would love to see the rest.

reply

I think the series 2 DVDs are coming out very soon. Judging from the Shock Records website, they're due out late Sept/early Oct.

(They got the actors' names wrong, but never mind that.)

I live in the Salt Lake City, Utah in the USA. They showed the Games on TV here prior to the 2002 Winter Olympics. We were able to record them but the tape is getting warn out. Do you know of any way I can get a copy of Season 1 and Season 2 on the American version of DVD?

Order them from Australia and buy a region-free DVD player...

reply

The Games DVDs aren't region-encoded! The one I've bought says it will play on any regional player. Head to shop.abc.net.au to order the discs on-line; currently only season 1 is out but more should follow.

I emailed Umbrella Entertainment yesterday, re the release of the second series, here is their response

Thank you for your query.

Umbrella will definitely be releasing The Games Series Two before the start of next year. However at this stage we do not have a confirmed release date.

Good news.

I'm still waiting! I want to add this to my collection. Is there any update on when the release is going to happen?

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we do not have the rights to THE GAMES – SERIES 2 at the moment. However we are looking into acquiring this title.

Kind Regards,

I live in the USA and I have both a Region 1 player (for US releases) and a Region 2 player (for European releases). 'The Games' Season One is Region 0. It plays fine on my Region 2 player but it does not play on my Region 1 player despite Region 0 supposedly being playable on all players.

According to the website, 'The Games' Season 2 is Region 4 which means, I assume, it will not play on either my Region 1 player or my Region 2 player. Presumably, I will now need to purchase a Region 0 player in order to play the Region 4 DVD, although as a bonus, the Region 0 player will also play my Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs, for which I already have Region 1 player and a Region 2 player.

Does this make ANY sense at all?

I own both Series 1 & 2 and I have verified and can confirm using VSO Inspector v2.0. the discs are encoded and formatted as follows:

Series 1:
ALL Regions (1,2,3,4,5,6 & 8) as opposed to Region 0 previously mentioned in this thread and PAL format.
There can be some confusion regarding Region 0 and ALL Region DVDs and this link in Wikipedia gives a pretty fair explanation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
The most likely cause for your DVD Series 1 not playing on your US Region 1 player is likely the format. Unless your player accepts both NTSC (US, Canada, Japan etc) and PAL formats these discs will be unplayable. Your Region 2 player is likely to be dual PAL/NTSC format, but definately PAL/SECAM format. Depending on the brand of your Region 2 DVD player, it may be possible to modify it's firmware via the remote control to make it multi-region. A google search with your brand and model number could lead you to a web-site that may make that possible.

Series 2:
Region 4, PAL format.
You would need to have a Multi-Region dual (PAL/NTSC) format player, or modify, if possible, your Region 2 player as described above to make it Multi-Region.

Your TV or monitor would also need to be able to accept PAL format signals. Most modern TVs do, although I cannot vouch for USA product.

I am in Australia, and for the last decade virtually every brand of DVD player sold here are mult-region and are dual PAL/NTSC format. The landscape has changed with Blu-Ray players, which although dual PAL/NTSC format, are locked to Region codes for both Blu-ray and DVD functions.

I source DVDs from UK/Europe, USA/Canada & Japan/Korea so I never have any issues with DVD compatibilty. Because Blu-ray players are region locked here, I have resisted the need to move to Blu-ray. Hopefully there may be a legal ruling one day, either here in Australia or by the EU that will force a change to open source for all manufacturers.

Series 2 was an absolute cracker by the way. Brilliant satire.

Good luck,

They are definately region-free (I was in Australia last year after I posted my last message and picked up series 1 at the ABC store), but they are still PAL, so you need to keep that in mind. Many players will still play these discs - my Toshiba portible does a nice job!

where is series 2 dvd?

reply

I'm going to chuck a Cartman if this doesn't come out....so two different companies have claimed to be producing series 2 DVDs only to produce nothing at all. A pox on the lot of them.

Why can't the ABC release it themselves?

Ok, while the mixed messages this Umbrella mob are sending out are not encouraging, recent news on'Games' star John Clarke's website has said

"In answer to questions from a great many viewers, yes, there will be a DVD of Series 2 of 'The Games.' We're working on it now."

Now those are words inspire at least some confidence!

It also references several other Clarke & Dawe ABC DVD projects that are still in production.

Bonus: You can also find an almost complete collection of 'The Games' scripts in PDF format available for free download of Johns' site.

See here for the site mentioned:
