.. quickly!

And a Brazilian version could be made also.

It's on the way for 2011 with the characters playing consultants for the 2012 games!

According to the wikipedia article on "The Games":

Clarke and Riley will reprise their roles in a spinoff series The Games: London Calling, in which the characters are consultants to the 2012 Summer Olympics, to appear on the Nine Network in 2011.

So about the London olympics, anyway.

Oh, I actually thought the BBC would produce a remake, void of the ABC charactrers ... but oh well.

Well - aren't they? I hear "Twenty twelve" is due to start shortly (nothing on IMDB but I found it in the British Comedy Guide) and stars Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes and more... sounds very much like the same theme as "The Games".

I can't wait to see the true Aussie sequel though... laughed so damned hard through the first two series.

2012 is a blatant rip-off

A story appeared recently in The Sunday Times in London about the fact that the BBC is about to broadcast a program bearing marked conceptual similarities to The Games, a show we created in 1998.

It featured a good-looking bald man and Gina Riley, Bryan Dawe and Nicholas Bell. Two series, each of 13 episodes, were produced in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics and it was, at that time, the highest rating comedy in the history of the national broadcaster, the ABC (all stand).

In 2006, shortly after London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games and following approaches from several overseas producers interested in making their own versions of the show, we spoke with producer Rick McKenna who had experience in overseas markets with Kath and Kim. Rick McKenna travelled to London and met with BBC comedy head Jon Plowman.

At a later date Jon Plowman introduced Rick McKenna to writer John Morton with the prospect that perhaps we might consider John Morton as one of the writers on the project. John Morton was lent DVDs of The Games. At the time he acknowledged he had never previously seen nor heard of the show and was impressed and keenly interested.

After many phone conferences, meetings and almost four years of email exchanges, Mr Morton and Mr Plowman have now apparently made a satirical series for the BBC about the organising committee of the London Olympics (set to air next Monday March 14 on BBC4 in the UK), without our participation or permission.

In other words, it seems that in 2008/9 Morton had already had the idea he'd never heard of and was so excited by, and he was interested in obtaining episodes of The Games only so he could check out how someone had created his original idea in Australia, 12 years previously. We have suggested that once Mr Morton finds out that repressed memory is not an Olympic event, perhaps he could return the DVDs.

That really sucks. Here was a diamond opportunity to collaborate with some of the finest English and Australian talent (the English cast is pretty great!) and hit it out of the ballpark (to use an American metaphor) - and they blew it off?

Tsk, tsk, tsk. For shame! The English should be embarrassed.

Look what happened when Matt Lucas showed up on "Kath & Kim" as Sharon's half-sister Karen - it was one of the best episodes ever!

(Why'd they say "good looking bald man" or is that just because there's no way you could be in Australia without knowing John Clarke, even though he's a Kiwi [I'm told]?)

Very surprised at Mr. Plowman, he's got a track record of such impressive work. Why'd he have to steal this one? DISGUSTING.

Thanks for updating us, even though it is quite disconcerting (and illegal?)

LOL "disgusting" and we ought to be "embarrassed" count the number of British productions that are remakes of an original series, there aren't many whereas the opposite is undeniably true, especially for American TV. Anyway, as far as I can tell "Twenty Twelve" is only being broadcast on BBC4 which guarantees that it won't outshine the original Aussie series.

Sorry for coming so late to the party.
I first heard about this program after discovering Twenty Twelve.
I've seen some funny YouTube clips from The Games.
I've also seen some from another Australian program called CNNNN.
I didn't realize there was such brilliant satire/parody/spoof/etc. from OZ.
I don't mean to sound like some American-centric jerk.
I've been exposed to great British satire/parody... well, you get the idea, from PBS.
Unfortunately, I haven't had the same luxury regarding such Australian programming.
I've just picked up Frontline's complete series from chaos.com and I was hoping people might recommend other Australian shows in the vein of The Games, CNNNN and Frontline.
Thank you for any assistance.
Scott :)
