Burtonesque

Did anyone else think that this film had a similar directing style to Tim Burton's films? Similar atmosphere, special effects, make-up, characters, etc.

No, not at all really. Just because it's fantasy and surreal doesn't mean it feels like Burton, as it didn't to me. Burton's atmosphere, special effects, makeup, etc are quite different. At least IMO. The only thing that really seemed Tim Burton to me was Alice wearing striped socks, and stripes have been a part of Alice in Wonderland before Tim was even born.

Precisely. And now that Burton has done his own version of this tale, I'm assuming everyone here has seen it, and will definitely agree that the 1999 version is in no way resembles Burton's version (which I greatly prefer to this version, which I found highly off-putting, and I am in no way a Tim Burton fan).
