What is with all the soldiers?

For some reason, wars are mentioned and quite a few characters like the Hatter, Caterpillar, and Tweedledee mentioned serving their country. I don't know if the director is fascinated by war, or if he thought it would make the characters more realistic. I'm wondering what he was trying to sat by deviating from the book that way and arbritrarilly adding those things in.
