Similar games

Are there any similar games to the X-Files in terms of game play? I really loved the "live action" and real video segments.

Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, but they both suck.

Quantum Gate and Quantum Gate 2 are of a similar gaming engine. Both are directed by Greg Roach, who also directed the X Files game. They also star Paige Witte who played Mary Astrodaurion. Quantum Gate 2 also features the guy who played Shanks.

The Quantum Gate games are both for the PC. I understand QG2 is a little harder to come by these days though, and sometimes goes under the title of 'Vortex'. Shouldn't have any trouble finding the first one though.

I warn you now, neither are nearly as good as the X Files game, in fact I thought they were pretty poor. The only reason I played them was for Paige Witte, isn't that sad? haha.

Well, since I grew up playing these, here are some from memory lane! In no particular order...

Flash Traffic: City of Angels
Under a Killing Moon
The Pandora Directive
Overseer
Spycraft
Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within
Seventh Guest
Urban Runner
Phantasmorgia
Goosebumps: Escape from Horrorland
Shannara

Good luck finding any of those these days, but there was a ton available back in the good ol' days! And if shooting games with real actors is what you're after, I do remember 'Who Shot Johnny Rock' and the Mad Dog McCree' series as being rather noteworthy...

"Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, but they both suck. "

Come now, they weren't half bad. Admittedly, the first part of the series was overhyped and badly made (though still quite enjoyable, in my opinion), but the sequel, though cheesy in places, was far superior and a good game in general. Lots of atmosphere, though "The X-Files: The Game" improves on almost every possible aspect of "Phantasmagoria 2". Maybe it's just nostalgia (believe it or not, I played the Phantasmagoria series as a nine-year-old kid), but I'd still recommend them to the original poster. Be warned, however, that FMV games are almost uniformly of a bygone age; today, they are deemed far from profitable and are very rarely produced. "Phantasmagoria", for example, was made in '95 and it's sequel in '97.

Though it's an equally old game, I wholeheartedly recommend "The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery". The interface differs greatly from the one found in "The X-Files", but the game itself is excellent (it is generally considered the best FMV adventure game).

As a previous poster mentioned, the old American Laser Games releases (Mad Dog McCree and its sequel, The Last Bounty Hunter, Who Shot Johnny Rock?, Crime Patrol) are the way to go if you're looking for FMV shooting games. I personally loved them as a kid and I don't think any other company has made similar games. By the way, the shooting itself is quite akin to the shootout sequences in "The X-Files". Only there's much more of them ;).

I also heard "The 7th Guest" (1992) was good, as is, supposedly the Tex Murphy series and "Black Dahlia" (1998). I highly doubt if there are many others worth mentioning. Hope this helped, though.

Someone above said Myst...

I've just started playing it - finally got the sound to work.
I wouldn't say so. Heck no at all.
The closest i've ever played to it is The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery. Slightly different in as much as it's 3rd person - but the look is similar.
Tex Murphy definitely - Killing Moon and Pandora yes. Never played Overseer, though.

I agree with everything in your first paragraph. PHANTASMAGORIA: A PUZZLE OF FLESH was actually better than the first one. I hesitated for a long time before playing it because I thought the end to the first one was lousy.

I agree with your second paragraph as well. GABRIEL KNIGHT: THE BEAST WITHIN is a great game to recommend to anyone interested in the interactive movie genre. I know it's generally considered the best but my favourite is definitely THE X-FILES. There is no contest.

Regarding the final paragraph. I love the TEX MURPHY games and BLACK DAHLIA. I might also add RIPPER to that list as well since it was developed by the same people who made BLACK DAHLIA. As for THE 7TH GUEST, well lots of people love the game but I thought it was absolutely poor from beginning to end and massively over-rated. Just because THE 7TH GUEST was the first doesn't mean it was the best. Just try to prevent laughter when the ending to that one comes!

Well, other investigative games with similar interface are:

Black Dahlia (impossibly difficult)

Blade Runner

Can't think of others right now

I can't remember the name of it but I used to have a pc game that was very similar to this except it was a submarine game. I also remember a demo that was on the game where you were a spy. It was almost exactly like The X-Files game. Maybe somebody here will remember the names.

I played an FMV game on Mega CD... It was called Night Trap. You had to beat the game by setting off traps to take out the bad guys while an undercover agent is in the house with teenagers. Game took reflexes quick thinking and a bit of luck.

I have that game where you are a spy. It's Spycraft: The Great Game. You play a CIA operative investigating the assasination of a Russian presidency candidate.

A lot of releases by Sierra Entertainment utilized this type of gaming engine back then. To name the games in my collection that have it (Sierra and others):

Police Quest 4
Police Quest: SWAT
Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair
Phantasmagoria 1
Phantasmagoria 2

+pretty much ANY Sega CD game. That's the main reason I bought the Sega CD system heh. Sure the gaming engine may be abandoned nowadays, but I still find them to be pretty damn fun. Enter the Matrix for the Playstation also uses it. Hope this helps.

I think Mist and Riven were already said. Otherwise Shivers 1 and 2 used to freak the hell outta me when I was a kid. Police Quest Swat was also pretty awesome too. You actually command your team and snipe and what not. Fun games
