I finished watching Vidocq few minutes ago. It was on TV and I missed the begginning so maybe there was the answer to my question.

So here it goes:

If the writer and alchemist was the same person, who was following the writer while he was investigating in this evil district? We could see a shadow behind him a few times. This is pretty irritating because, everybody watching the film would think that it was the alchemist's shadow - so it would completely exclude the writer being the main villain... I understand that this trick made everyone astonished when the identity of the murderer was revealed, but it wasn't explained in the movie since what I know.

Well, it's been a while since I saw the movie, but wasn't it Vidocq's partner... or vidocq? Someone investigating the writer?

That shadow was unintentional. It was just the camera operator following the actor. People may have thought that this was part of the story but it's a misinterpretation.

I don't think it is unintentional, I guess it refers to the shadow immediately following the journalist, an "erase all witnesses" kind of things. It is a bit confusing for the viewer but the killer is covering himself.

At some point I thought it was a kind of schizofrenic situation, but I think the killer was always aware of his actions.

It's been a while since I watched, but I'm pretty sure it was Vidocq's partner. HE is the one that figures all out in the end, working for Vidocq, who is hiding.

yeah it was Nimier... notice his top hat (the one on top of his grave at the end).
