As I was watching it my thought was that The Alchemist WAS Batman... eccentric guy, urban legend, with all sorts of esoteric knowledge, special equipment and mad skills.
The movie was like Sherlock Holmes vs. Batman... crazy Batman... with a good bit of Phantom of the Opera mixed in.
