I'm looking for similar (esp. French) films, preferably mid-90s or later. Any recommendations?

Le Pacte des loupsor or in english title Brotherhood of the wolf, it's also French film and it's even better than vidocq in my opinion... I't is also 17th or 18th century, everything is mystic and dark.. Great film!
Yeah, I am ok with the Pacte des loups advice. And I will recommend Gangs of New York and Sleepy Hollow too, for the era, costumes, and darkness.

shareTry to watch "Weapons of Ass Destruction", by Jules Jordan. Sadly, It's a better movie.
shareYou might enjoy "Young Sherlock Holmes" as well. It's mid 80's Steven Spielberg, but don't let that put you off. In a way it's more reminiscent of Edgar Allan Poe and his "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" than of Doyle's stories. Or the TV-series "Carnivà le", a slightly later in setting (1930's Dustbowl-era America), but it has a similar sense of darkness, magic & surrealism. And then there's the Japanese animé-series "Gankutsuou - The Count of Monte Cristo" amazing visual reinterpretation of Dumas' novel in a steampunk setting!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Look into The City of Lost Children (1995), and Delicatessen (1991). Both are French films by talented director Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Sort of reminds me the movie "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" which takes place in the mid 1700's in France. An insane perfume maker tries to make the ultimate perfume by murdering youg women to capture the essence of their being.
