movie question (WARNING; the 2 biggest spoilers of the movie!!)

I liked the movie, I really enjoy the use of color and the digital recording. Great atmoshpere and good use of the camera. I liked the story, but there was something that bothered me.

If Vidocq had seen the face of the murdered, and survived the attack, then why didn't he immediately capture the Alchemist when he contacted Nimier about Vidocq's biography. I would say that Nimier and Vidocq would have had contact immediately after the failed murder on Vidocq? Yeah, I know, Vidocq didn't involve Nimier at a certain point, but still, he could have killed the Alchemist instead of setting up this major line of events (in which other people were killed, which could have been prevented by immediate action).

Or do I simply miss a certain plotpoint?

reply

Interesting question. I generally had the impression the whole plotline wasn't too convincing, and the outcome also was major let-down for me... but still the pictures were so beautiful I enjoyed watching this movie a lot.

As for your question, I think the reason given was that the people in the factory hid Vidocq away immediately after the fight- so probably he wasn't in contact with the outside world anymore. Why? Good question, again ;-)

Thanks. I think Vidocq was in contact with the outside, because when he revealed himself, Nimier and Préah didn't act surprised. Even that police man knew about it, since he was already walking towards the Alchemist, ready and knowing what was going on. So Vidocq was able to contact the outside world.

reply

Good point. The whole business remains quite illogical then...

1. Vidocq says something like "the workers took care of me" so i think he was injured in the fight or in that oven. He also says he called for nimier that afternoon.
2. I think they needed all the setup with the mirrors to defeat the Alchemist. After the fight in the beginning Vidocq knew he would need something more..
3. If they would have captured the Alchemist immediatly, the movie would have been over pretty soon =). Stuff like that always reminds me of Lord of the Rings - why didnt they fly with the eagles to mount doom in the first place? maybe its ín the book...

reply

Too much orcs around.

Stealth needed.

reply

FLYING orcs?

reply

Too far. The whole journey took them over 5 years to make.

reply

I don't remember if that question was actually raised in the books or somewhere else, but I read that the explanation was that the Eagles simply didn't want to be mixed in the affairs of Middle Earth and would refuse to take them to Mount Doom. Now if that's so why would they help during the last battle? I don't remember. Pretty lame excuse either way.

reply

Pretty much. The Eagles (the Americans) didn't want to get involved, and didn't until the very last minute.

reply

It's explained in the book and to some degree in the movie, too. They needed stealth. If they just flew there directly, Sauron's Eye would have spotted them and the Nazgûl would have intercepted them.
The other reason is that the eagles aren't loyal allies. They are an ancient, noble race that only mind their own business. Basically they thought mankind should sort out their own *beep* When Sauron was defeated by an allied force and union of middleearth's people, the eagle had the proof that those people are actually worth saving.

It is quite possible that Nimier hadn't been contacted by Vidocq when "Etienne" first talked to him. Or maybe they wanted to be certain it was the Alchemist.
Or more likely (as another poster suggested) if they hadn't had the mirror-trap and he'd suspected that they were on to him, he could have slipped away (the police sure couldn't have caught him!)

There is no Emoticon for what I am feeling..!

I like the theory that he was too powerful and evasive to be caught but it is still pretty weak. They knew he was killing people so they should have set it up faster.
And in the lord of the rings, the eagles couldnt fly into mordor because the eye of sauron was able to spot everything in his lands. He would have sent some ring wraiths to kill them. In the book they explain how pippin and frodo use their elven capes to camoflauge themselves. When frodo puts the ring into the fire saurons power diminishes and he cant see anymore.

reply

No, the Eagles didn't go there for two reasons: It was dramatically inappropriate, and because they are agents of higher powers who want man to show man can take care of affairs. The first Lord of the Eagels, Thorondor, in the first age, took on Morgoth himself, managing to injure him before getting away unscathed. (Morgoth used to be Sauron's boss in those days, a higher power in his own right). While Gwaihir and company are smaller than Thorondor, they still would have little reason to fear the Ringwraiths. And this is another point: As Tolkien explicitly states in a letter, fear is the primary weapon of the Nazgul. They are NOT combat hogs. And Peter Jackson's suggestion that the Witchking (who was deliberately powered up by Sauron for the battle) could take on Gandalf, while not explicitly rejected in the book, is highly unlikely in the original context.

What would the Nazgul do to kill the eagles anyway? They have to reach them first, and need their flying steeds for that. But the back of these beasts would be broken before the Nazgul says "Oops"....

reply

"What would the Nazgul do to kill the eagles anyway?"

They could scare them away.

reply

Whats Nazgul anyway?

Why couldnt Gandalf just conjur up some birds; they wouldnt need to be that big, considering hobit size. Or even levitate the ring through the cosmos, OR tie it to that moth he had control over; send that thing to it's death. Let's face it, Sarion was an eye on a tower wasnt it? Tree's walking around is one thing but a tower the size of the Rialto is another thing all together.

reply

There are many reasons as to why he couldn't do those things you suggested. I can't explain them all, you'd have to read The Fellowship Of The Ring for that, but I can tell you this. The ring has a mind of its own. it wants a master with high ambitions. When it's lost, it can let someone find it, not by leading the person actively, but by giving him unconscious impulses. When its on a hand it doesn't like, it can let itself slide of it, to be found by someone who's more powerhungry. So as long as the ring exists in this univese, someone will find it, and someone will use it. Maybe not in the first one thousand years, but eventually it will happen. So they could either postpone the threat, or erradicate it.

And the Nazgul are the nine ring ghosts.

reply

"Why couldnt Gandalf just conjur(sic) up some birds...?"

I think the ability to conjure living creatures is something that's outside the realm of possibility when it comes to magic. It's possible to change one living creature into another, but not possible to create life out of nothing.

And don't kid yourself about Sauron merely being an eye on a tower; he still had immense power, even in his weakened state. And Mordor isn't exactly the easiest place to get into except via stealth; if he'd attempted to use magic, he would have been detected immediately. And a moth would be incapabel of carrying an object as heavy as a ring; also, it no doubt would have managed to get away of its own accord during the attempt.

About Vidocq: I agree with the rest when they say that they needed the Alchemist completely trapped, with nowhere to go, and they needed the ambush with the mirrors. Plus, if they'd captured him the moment he'd contacted Nimier, there wouldn't have been much of a movie, would there?

When you're miserable, you need to make someone even more miserable than yourself

reply

The way I see it Vidocq probably had to keep a low profile for a couple of days since he wanted everyone to believe he was dead. Therefore I don't think that when Nimier and Preah first talked to Etienne they knew that he was the Alchemist. Otherwise they wouldn't have helped Etienne find the journalist and the Doctor's wife. I think that by the time Etienne/Preah/Nimier all meet again for the second time when they take Etienne to the glass factory they've been in contact with Vidocq and are now up to date with what's going on. That explains why Preah and Nimier first help Etienne and then later on lead him into the trap set up by Vidocq.

reply

The idea was that they could't just catch the alchemyst because he was too strong. That was why they made this ambush. Vidocq says it at the end "He has no place to go" they made sure the only way was into the chamber with mirrors.

reply

Vidocq has seen his face but didn't have any strong evidence to support it. That is why they let them, so that they would trully reveal him, that it's trully him.
And they had to prepeare to defeat him, like those mirrors.
