mechanical animations?

In anime like this and Akira, Lensman etc. I always find the animation of the machines/vehicles just mind-blowing! This movie has the most impressive of all though IMHO. Can someone please explain to me how they achieve such incredible 3D rotation and scaling? Do they make computer models and trace over them, or do they construct scale models and draw them from different angles, or what?

I'm just a casual anime fan, but I've been wondering about this for so many years - Thanks!

Computers played an important role in Spriggan. The most notable scene I think is where Fattman is killed. I've dabbled in animation at the college i'm going to go to soon some and from what I've seen work is done on computers as some sort of guide for the animators. Like the vehicle, driving around Fattman as Yu blasts him with the chain gun. That was traditional CG, but to be done by hand alone would be impossible.
As for the rest, i'm sure the giant spaceship the boy was on is completely computer.
