Explanation for the marked bills.

As usual whenever I watch a movie like this there's a sticking point in the plot that I'm confused about - What was the deal with the marked bills on Desmot's person? Did the police know about them from their investigation into the stolen art? If so, wouldn't they have to have already known that Desmot was involved in the stolen art market? Thanks.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

As I understood it he had a partial bundle of new sequential banknotes in his safe. When someone spent some new banknotes people thought he might have been connected to Desmot's death and he was picked up. He turned out just to have sold Desmot some stolen art. So both crimes in the film are "solved" in a rather haphazard manner.
