How did Neil go from homeless islander to London politician in 7 years?

I know Bruce helped him get settled in in London, but it still seems bizarre to me. Is it because of his fame from the documentary? It is hard for me to imagine that someone could make that transition and get elected otherwise. And even the documentary is a double edged sword, as it highlights some eccentricities of his that people might otherwise not know about if he was just running for office.

I believe you are underestimating what Bruce did and overestimating the importance of the political position.

I assume from the results, Bruce accepted him as is. Was patient and understanding. Gave Neil the attention and space to work things out in a safe place. Neil needed another human being to have compassion. That goes a long way.

On the other side, it was an unpaid, very low level, basically no power position. I think it is fair to consider it more a hobby than an actual political career. And while it was in London, it was not a London position. I believe it was more a district position. Forgive my Yank ignorance, but it seemed more like representing a neighborhood in minor affairs than being involved in running London.

He made a few speeches and handed out fliers. Sure there was more to it, but...

But good for Neil! You are still correct. That is quite a long way for a man in his condition to go in such a short time. I am sure being in the Up series didn't hurt and there must be other factors we did not get told about. But still, Love goes a long way! Especially when it has been so long.

Bruce was one of my favorite people. He was a religious Socialist - which is rare nowadays, since most are selfish....

And, he actually helps Neil -- people can proselytize, but actions speak louder than words.
