It is LONG overdue for some of the ladies to come forward

I just saw this great movie again the other night, and I think it is long overdue for some of the females to have their story told in a miniseries, like the Marvelettes, the Vandellas, or of course the Supremes. They really did a great job with this movie, the music, etc, and it would be cool if a female group's story was told, I would definitely watch it.

They're supposed to have a movie about the Supremes with Faith Evans playing Florence Ballard. I think actress Essence Atkins would make a great Diana Ross.

reply

Faith Evans is no longer a part of the project, it is Jurnee Smollett (rumored), and Solange Knowles(rumored) as Diana Ross.

reply

O.k. Here's the deal. The following is who I would cast:

(1) Florence Ballard would be play by Jill Scott.

(2) Diana Ross would be played by Chrisette Michelle.

(3) Mary Wilson would be played by Elise Neal

Who would you cast?

reply

I never thought of Jill Scott as Florence Ballard, but now that I have made some mental pictures, I could see it, and there is no question as to whether she has the talent, she would be a solid choice. I would have liked Faith Evans also, it was too bad it didn't work out

I think Solange Knowles should play Diana Ross, she could nail it

As for Mary Wilson, either Kelly Rowland, Kerry Washington, or Elise Neal

I wasn't going by Essence's voice, I was going by her looks and she looks like Diana to me, and she still looks young enough to play Diana in her twenties even though Essence is almost 40. Jurnee looks nothing like Flo and isnt even shaped like her. Flo was a lot more curvy than Jurnee. Jurnee is super super thin.

As long as they give it the Temptations mini series treatment. I love this movie. I watch everytime it's on TV. It has to be one of the most entertaining films about a group.

Don't Ray, or Great Balls of Fire, or Walk the line the film. don't boring it up.

I apologize for grammatical errors- a side effect of IMDbing on my iPhone.

You are so right, I was thinking in that vein as well, something that would hold up over time, their story could not be told in an hour, but even if it is feature film, as long as it is researched, etc, it should be good.

Although I was never a Supremes fan, I would like to see a miniseries about ALL of the girl groups of the 60's. I remember several, and week to week it was, like, here comes another set! It was a turbulent and exiting time in music history. I used to hit the bus before and after school with my transistor radio plugged in one ear keeping up with the latest music (on ALL stations). For those too young to know, the transistor radio was the precursor of the Walkman, Ipod, etc. It ran on one 9V battery.

Another good topic would be the dance shows from American Bandstand and Shebang right through the Mean Salsa Machine and Soul Train (into the 70's).

It was a wonderful time; the music today can't touch it. For some reason, for the past 25 years the music has turned into ugly, disgusting, and offensive NOISE--as ugly as Stravinsky was to Classical music.

I remember watching the Lloyd Thaxton show one afternoon as a child, and I can't remember the name of the surfer girl group performing but I do remember their one hit wonder "Popsicles, Icicles". They were all wearing the same dress--a popular Simplicity Pattern of the time, generally referred to as the Shift. At the end of their number they all (3) lifted one arm revealing HUGE sweat stains, and I LOL'ed.

Hey, does it have a beat, and can you DANCE to it?

I am surprised "Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme" by Mary Wilson has not been turned into a movie.

reply

Yeah, now that you mention it, so am I, and it probably could have been by now, had it not been for the securing the rights to the music, which is very crucial to the telling of this story or any Supremes story, for this matter, I hope we get one in our lifetime

reply

The movie "Dreamgirls" might be the closest thing.

reply

You may very well be right, because I remember that there was supposed to be a biopic about Florence Ballard of the Supremes with Faith Evans playing her and it seemed that everything that could go wrong did, so I will be content with "Dreamgirls" in the meantime.
