Who Was Really Singing

I know Terron Brooks (Eddie) can actually sing and did do some singing in the movie, but did Christian Payton (Paul) really sing too or was he lip singing?

reply

Yes he did do his own singing and so did Leon that played David. Leon has his own band

reply

Leon CAN sing, but he did not do all of his own singing in this film. Louis Price (A former Temptation from the late 1970s) dubs the vocals for both the David Ruffin character and the Dennis Edwards character when they are onstage.

The scene where Otis and Melvin come to David's house and he's singing "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" actually does use Leon's real vocals.

reply

I almost forgot that Louis Price was a Temptation. He replaced Dennis Edwards in the late 70s and was with the group for the Atlantic Records albums. He was replaced by a returning Dennis Edwards when the group returned to Motown in 1980. Then Price joined The Drifters, one of the few groups with more personnel changes than The Tempts.

Appreciate the info on who was singing. I always thought it was ironic that the actor who plays the group's founder Otis Williams seems to be the one actor who can't sing. What I mean is that when he is serenading Josephine after school it really looks and sounds dubbed. Of all the actors he seems to sing the least.

reply

It is lip synching, not singing. As in synchronized.
