The End Was totally unrealistic-SPOILERS

I liked the movie so I'm not complaining but it did get pretty unrealistic at the end when they tried to murder Tom and Maggie. The death of the dead girl was more a freak accident so it doesn't make any sense because the two sons would probably get something like 10-15 years and be free after maybe 5-10 years(ok, I'm not a law expert). If they would kill the couple in cold blood, they would get several life sentences on top.
Since the murder attempt is done in such a sloppy way, there is no doubt that they would get caught. I'm not sure if that ending was even necessary.

In real life, of course not. In a movie, definitely. It gave us what we expected for our $7 ticket - a tense, dramatic ending. Saving the life of Tom & Maggie, even if it meant killing Kurt & Harry, was expiation for Frank. He really did think theirs was a good, decent neighborhood. That's why the script called for him to say it earlier in the movie.

They aren't hardened criminals. All they think about is, if this guy calls the police, we go to prison, get assraped and our whole family is destroyed. they aren't thinking clearly. but yeah, the murder attempt was pretty bad.

Keep in mind that they(or at least one of them) was trying to rape the girl when they killed her, and that they had been forcibly confinding her in the house. So, if the cops found out about that, they could get sentenced for a bit more than just the killing.

That's just you analyzing the situation from an outside point of view. But in real life people don't usually think that rationally or calculate what's the benefit of doing this vs. that. They just act on instinct/panic and do what they think is necessary to save their butt.

I wonder if they weren't stopped , what would have happened next.

Ok , we're going to have to dispose of three new bodies plus Samantha's corpse in the basement. We're going to have to deal with cops asking why this couple tore up the house, and then disappeared.

Cops "So why'd there tear up the place and leave?"
Dad "Oh well you see, I had like a million dollars hidden in the basement and they were renteres, so they must have heard about the money somehow and after they found it they left, cause you know they knew it was my money so they'd get in trouble for stealing it. yeah.
Cops "ahuh. What about that guy down the street?"
Dad " Oh well his kid just shot himself ya know, it must have been so hard on him he just left"
Cops " Without taking his car eh?"
Dad (Throwing a bottle to his son) "Drink up".....
here we go again

She died during the committing of a felony (attempted rape), which is considered a capital offense. They could get a life sentence either way.

Can't stop the signal.

I know it wasn't very graphic, but it sure looked to me as if the one boy was raping the girl. Add that to the fact that she had the mental age of an 8 year old, I don't know what jury would have gone easy on them.
