Why did the filmmakers try to make all the characters dicks?

The fundamental problem with the film is there's no one to root for the protagonists aren't likable and you wanted the villain to win. If we were suppose to root for Kevin Bacon then why did they have him rape his neighbour and then have him look like a victim seeing his ex-girlfriend with someone else?, if Shue and Brolin are suppose to be the heroes then why are they shown making love behind Bacon's back? it would've worked for a different character but not for a main protagonist and why is everyone a bunch of loudmouths?

Feels like the filmmaker used only the first draft or was more into the special effects, sex and violence, they just couldn't decide on why should the audience care about the characters.

They didn't feel like scientists on the verge of a discovery as just foul mouth unprofessionals.

Speaking of characters you can't get invested in Kim Dickens' character Sarah is a totally unlikable character, this woman was a mouthy bitch from the first time she's on screen all way up to her final scene.

I caught the same vibe with the movie. I don't know if it's the fault of the director or writer, but they go a little overboard in trying to make the protagonists edgy (overkill cussing, etc.) to the point that the characters somewhat lose the viewer's sympathy and don't seem like serious scientists that anyone with a brain would put in charge of such an important project. Thankfully, it's just a little overboard because most of the rest of the researchers are sorta likable beyond Sebastian. And Linda and Matthew weren't really doing anything wrong by seeing each other since Linda was no longer Sebastian's babe.

Even though one member of the team morphs into the villain, Sebastian, he's not without interesting qualities in the first half of the movie. In fact, I can't help but respect his "we're the originators of this project so we make the rules" attitude and his consequent refusal to submit to the manipulative authorities over him.
