ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!

I can't believe people actually thought this was a good movie! This movie was AWFUL! Please do not waste your time or money watching it. The story had no cohesiveness whatsoever, the plot was ridiculous, and the gratuitous shots of Matt Dillon's jaw (and those stupid sunglasses-- just look at the movie cover...) got really old really fast. How this movie got funded I'll never know...

Oh for the love of God sj84-1!!!

reply

How can you can say the plot is ridiculous when it is loosely based on true events of the casinos opening on the Cambodian/Thai border?
I suppose you just don't realise those kind of things happen out here!

reply

i agree, it was a great movie, but paulangus, where on earth did you get that information my friend? if it's true i would love to read about it

reply

Well, guess this means we better not watch it again, since it's obviously no good from what he said. I used to love it, but now it's gay. Yup, never watching it again.

I just caught this movie on AMC. It was a little slow in the beginning, but got interesting really quickly. Easily one of the best things Matt Dillon has done, and I was genuinely surprised when I discovered he co-wrote and directed this film. This was an atmospheric and compelling film. Very well written, shot, acted and directed. Great understated performances.

They're serious sj84. I think they feel they are world travellers and multi-culturalists, and they are now Cambodian experts.
I got disturbed reading some of the threads, where someone would shrill out with idiot exclamation points how the scenery was fantastic.
Actually, the vast majority of the scenery was a sick, dirty, skumbucket, rundown heckhole, with grubwater sucking losers.
I found Matt Dillon to be a boring facewalk. Of course he directed it, he couldn't get enough of his expressionless mug and stanky t-shirt walking to and fro- toward and away from the camera.
The best character was the other white guy, not the bartender, but the dealmaker Dillon thought doublecrossed him, that knocked him over the head and took of in the car back to phenom pen. At least his character had some mystery about it, and it was hard to pin him down, and a surprisingly well done twist the way he died, not caring since his ethnic love was dead.
Dillon was the bottom of the barrel in this whole ugly, ugly, slow, cheap, dirty, flick.
Even the music was tin can stereotype. James Caan outdid him easily.

I'd like to think I was a bit of an 'expert' silicondoc. I've lived and worked in South East Asia for almost 8 years now and I am a frequent visitor to Phnom Penh.

reply

So what is your idea of a good movie about Americans getting in trouble in Asia, just out of curiosity?

reply

i liked it

reply

i second that notion. film was good.

reply

i think it's a very good film. dylan's best work as an actor and a very impressive directorial debut as well. i can't imagine how difficult it was to make this film all on location in a country like Cambodia.

reply

The film was wonderful. But not everybody's cup of tea.

reply

I took your advice and watched this movie, thanks.

reply

i agree that it had a slow start, but it was intriguing... all the shady business goin down made me nervous; it put me on the edge of my couch lol.
good flick =)

I absolutely loved this movie, although I do think it helps if you have spent some time in SEA and especially Cambodia. If you have spent time in some of these places with these kind of characters the whole movie makes perfect sense. A lot of neat subtleties and spot on characters. Fantastic music, photography and the mood is very real.
