Scorsese's most underrated movie?

Traditionally After Hours gets that label, but at this point so many people are queueing up to wax lyrical about how underrated After Hours is that it it's not actually all that underrated any more.

This one on the other hand kind up slipped under the radar and I believe still hasn't gotten it's due. It's a haunting, hypnotic lucid dream of a movie.

I agree with you, it's incredibly funny, sad, personal and profound I think. It takes a certain sense of humor and worldview to appreciate though, so I understand why some people find it difficult. I also find Who's That Knocking at My Door? very underappreciated, though that's mostly underseen more than anything.

Agree.. I think because of it's depressing subject.

It's absolutely stunning!

It's a haunting remarkable movie that will stay with you for days. It's the performance from Cage that made me appreciate him more as an actor and his interaction with the three different pasramedic partners is amazing.
It's humor is black but offers the needy reflection in it's bleak New York view.
Not to say it gives a good idea on how stressfull and tragic this Paramedic work actualy is.
I love this movie and people who say it's a Bad Taxi driver remake don't know what they're talking about.

You know, I think another reason many people don't like this film is because the narrative structure is different from most Scorsese films, in that it's not so much an A-to-Z storyline as it is about character & mood.

I couldn't agree more it's an athmosphere picture where you see Cage struggling with his inner demons at the backdrop of a relentless city in decay (The bad neighborhoods of NYC at the time at least).

And yeah "This is the worst suicide attempt ever" line was very funny.
But i thought the Ib bangin kid with his Overdose was really funny. The look Frank gives to Ving Rhameses character when he's praying to get the kid back is amazing while they just bring out the kit for OD'ers.

This movie is incredible. I agree, I can't believe this movie hasn't gotten it's due. Definitely one of the top 10 underrated movies of the 90's, especially of 1999, which had so many great movies. I rented this movie in 2005, watched it for the first time, and ended up never returning it. Told Blockbuster that I lost it and just paid the selling price.

Criminally underrated!

Well the average score here on imdb is 6.8 and I gave it a 7 so I don't really think it's underrated. Don't get me wrong it's definitely a solid film, but for it to have been truly great, Frank Pierce would have to have been portrayed by a much better actor than Nicholas Cage. I know Cage gets a lot of hate, and I don't really think he's terrible, but he's definitely not good enough to carry a movie like this where the whole film hinges on his performance.

Oh really, you mean like the performance in Leaving Las Vegas?....

Cage is qualified to carry an entire film with his performance, several of his older films prove this. However, he lost a lot of respect because he's taken so many bad movies and low budget action flicks. Now, I'm not saying he's an amazing actor, but he's nailed a few roles.

Underrated Scorsese films:

This gets #1 spot. IMO:

Bringing out the dead
After Hours
Age of Innocence(less so since Scorsese calls it his best. Probably unworthy of the list for that reason)
The Color Of Money
Gangs of New York
King of Comedy
Shutter Island

Never saw New York, New York or Kundun so maybe those would make my list. The Aviator is one of those films that I would call a masterpiece, but not underrated. However, ten years from now might be completely ignored and make it to my number 3 if people forget how great it is.

Based on feature films alone, only 1 would say is overrated- Cape Fear but maybe I like the original too much to appreciate the remake. And excluding concert films, documentaries, TV movies, Last Temptation I would say is also overrated. Although both CF and LToC are still very good films.

Boxcar Bertha and Who's That Knocking at my door are the only two I'd call mediocre films. The rest are appropriately appreciated. And never seen a bad film by Scorsese(but again Kundun and NY,NY I haven't seen so maybe he has made one or two bad films).

I was about 7,8 or 9 years old when I mom watched it once on Showtime. I thought it was a horror film and I remember a scene or two frightening me. I just bought a VHS at the flea market and plan on watching it.

Do you think that maybe a Criterion release is possible?

reply

That ain't happening. Not unless people really go back and look at the film.

I saw it in theaters and saw it for the first time since last night...really a terrific film. The writing misses in some cases but it had guts and the direction was powerful. Great work from everyone involved. The cinematography was actually unbelievable.

It seems most of Scorsese's most underrated films tend to get a re-evaluation after time. Even New York, New York, which is admittedly overshadowed by the twin towers of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull book-ending it, is seen as a lost gem and an interesting genre exercise in Scorsese's canon.

Give it another five years, and Bringing Out the Dead will get its due. It's an incredible film with a unique visual style that's perfect for when it's 4am and I'm lookin' to get a buzz.

Going station to station is hunky dory but if the trip's low on heroes it can drive Aladdin Sane.
