I cant believe the rating is so low......

This movie is a modern day Scorsese classic. Noone makes movies like this nowadays. I guess the plotlessness turned many people away but Scorsese himslef has said that he feels uncomfortable when tied to a plot. This is a great character study and proof that Scorsese is still making classic films. The rating should be at least an 8.0

"Bringing Out the Dead" isn't as great as some of Scorsese's best work, but it does deserve the same amount of respect and admiration towards any movie made by any well-known film-maker

It is indeed a modern day Scorsese classic. The direction was superb as well as the acting of Nicolas Cage. This movie is able to dwell under the main character's skin to explore his inner feelings of loss and hopelessness. A great but underrated movie, 9.5/10

I agree as far as deep impressions concerning inner feelings are concerned, but I don't attribute that primarily to Cage. I have read the book before I saw the movie, in fact before I even realized there was a movie, and the truly superb work is in Connelly's book. Of course, it's quite an achievement to transfer a great novel onto the screen, but I think it's important not to forget who created the insights in the first place.

Las Vegas washes away your sins. It's like a morality car wash.

The only film I could compare it to would be THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL (Wim Wenders). The atmosphere is similar, the plot isn't though.

I just want to bump this post because it's been 10 years since the OP made this, and that makes a decade of supporting this film to have a 8.0 rating.

Agreed, underrated!

I said I never had much use for one....never said I didn't know how to use it.

Well said.

I know your post was 12 years ago, but I must agree %100, I've seen this film about 8 times (3 times in the last 2 days) and it just keeps getting better and better. Amazing performances all around, especially from Cliff Curtis, Marc Anthony, Ving Rhames, Tom Sizemore and John Goodman. Nicolas Cage played his part well and despite Patricia Arquette's wooden acting, she really didn't bring down the film in any way. I wish I worked with people as nuts as Rhames and Sizemore!

.. I am, in a word, terse.
