This movie is a modern day Scorsese classic. Noone makes movies like this nowadays. I guess the plotlessness turned many people away but Scorsese himslef has said that he feels uncomfortable when tied to a plot. This is a great character study and proof that Scorsese is still making classic films. The rating should be at least an 8.0

I read your article and it is very good and in-depth. I whole-heartedly agree that this film is underrated. I recently viewed it again and it still holds much impact. I think that this movie will be reevaluated and recognized as a great piece of art. In your article you question why Scorsese's only real box office success was with Cape Fear. I think it is because the majority of people who go the theatre to watch a movie stick to "check your brain at the door" movies like Spiderman. Scorsese makes films for people that appreciate filmmaking as an art form. Bringing out the Dead is a great movie, there's no doubt about it, but it will definitely not appeal to fans of crap like "The Hot Chick" and other similar wastes of money. Scorsese will eventually get the credit he deserves and so will BOTD. Gangs of New York was fantastic and looks to do very well with the awards so Scorsese will have some extra attention on him. Here's hoping that he makes believers out of most moviegoers so that we dont have to endure any more "movies" that are made for the single purpose of making money off of people who don't even appreciate film for what it is: Art.

I don't really think there are many paralells between Taxi Driver and BoTD, they just happens to be a bit similar. I agree on your thought of braindead persons to leave the art alone. Or, maby not alone, for I will not move for anything.
But, I didn't like Gangs of New York as much as BoTD at all. BoTD takes it all, god, it's a real masterpiece! It IS art.
And I wish to say that movie can be braindead pictures as well as true art. So, I prefere to stick with the art, and leave the meaningless movies to the others...
Last Tango I wish your hopefull prediction would have come true but alas no, the film industry is only becoming more and more driven by money. 90% of films nowadays are stupid films for stupid people/kids, it's such a shame that to see a great film I have to watch a dvd not visit my local cinema.

I agree that this movie was very well directed, and the cinematography was absolutly wonderful giving the dark uncomfortable feel that it needed. But I liked this movie a lot better the first time a saw it when it was Taxi Driver. Sadly I actually agreed when the critics that called this movie "Ambulance Driver".

This movie is definitely a classic in its own rights. I watched it opening day in the theatre and at first didn't know whether I should have laughed, cried, or what-I just sat and watched...amazed. I did think that Patricia Arquette's portrayal is very wooden and fake, however, but overall, this film was great in every sense of the word. Some of the lines in the movie are a riot. "Don't make me take off my sunglasses!", "I'll preach heaven and beat the hell outta you!", and any line in the "I B Bangin', Lord" scene. This was comparative to Taxi Driver in the depraved, insomniac, martyr sense, but took the best components from that movie and made one sick twisted ride out of this one. I love the recurring scene of the junkie who keeps going back the the hospital only to have the nurse say to him "So you got drunk and you fell down" "You're just going to go back out and get drunk and and fall down again" Mayve its just my sense of humor.

As a paramedic I'm naturally critical of shows with medical prcodeures; when something unrealistic happens, it drives me nuts! BotD however is one of my favourite films! It's realistic in its surreality, we watch it at the station for laughs & commiseration. With Mother, Jugs & Speed, Office space this is almost like CE & training! Teriffic movie from our point of view. Thanks to everyone involved!

To say this film should be called Ambulence Driver is quite the same as saying Full Metal Jacket should be called Paths Of Glory II.

I enjoyed watching this movie and will watch it whenever it is on.
actually to tell you the truth, i wish that it had even less plot. I think it would have worked better as just a random bunch of calls, instead of having plot threads running through the film.
I enjoyed it, but it was too damn long and repetitive. I kept waiting for it to end. Any point in the film would have made a good ending.

I saw the first half of this film on TV, but due to unforeseen circumstances, had to turn it off somewhere around the point where the main character (Cage) is in this apartment where he takes the relaxation pill. Could someone please give me some summary of how the story goes from there, to give an impression?

This one of Scorsese's greatest achievements, up to date.
The direction is full of life, the dialogue is entertaining and holds truth (and much philosophy), and the acting is realistic (in a surrealistic approach).
Plot lines ruin good films; period.
Scorsese feels out of sync when surrounded by a plot, and this film shows you that. Scorsese almost never let down the audience and he has a certain presence that is felt and seen in every one of his films (much like Kubrick had).
The score surprised me, why's it so low? 6.7 was it? It should be at least 8.
Members of the IMBD are not morons (although the Adaptation thread is pathetic, for noone understood the film) and are sensible enough to watch and understand a certain film, no?
Someone has to do something about the score... It's a damn shame...

I've written several times on the Adaptation message board - though not recently. Perhaps you can check out some postings of mine, although it might require some effort to find them.
Anyhow, I think Adaptation is a superb film, and I'm glad I went to see it on the big screen.
Plot lines ruin good films? In other words, Casablanca, Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, High Noon, and Raiders of the lost Ark would have all worked better if they didn't have a plot?

I just finished watching this and was highly impressed. I'm not Christian, but this is a great Christ movie. The music is awesome, the humor sent me into fits of laughter, and while I understand connections to "Taxi Driver" (Scorsese, Schrader, driving around NYC), this is a much different movie.

shareYep, just someone else to add late prasies to this movie. Don't know how I misssed it the first time around. An incredible ride.... wildly funny, fightening and hypnotic. I'd rate it as one of Scorsese's best; enjoyed it more than Cape Fear, I think thats his only movie I didn't care for. And who the hell is Wayne Malin, the guy who gave that lame review on the cover page?
