Was this film produced by Gibson's company Icon? I always remebered it as an Icon film, but now I'm not so sure.
The film certainly seemed to fit with Gibson's professed religious views. At one point, the anti-christ character complains that there is too much morality in America today.

And when will they learn that Modern Satanism is overall meant to be a strong metaphor of good Individualism and necessary Nihilism, besides the expression of enlightened fellows who feel the urgent need of declaring themselves free from the oppression of Monotheistic Cults (expecially Christianism and Islam, two of the worst plagues which have been affecting humanity since the beginning of times)? SATANISM IS AGAINST OBSCURANTISM, SATANISM IS A METAPHOR OF THE LIGHT OF REASON. Don't muddle iconography with phylosophy, please. Satanism is evil only according to the portrayal drawn by "God"'s followers, the same people who tries to ridiculize Marx, Nietzsche and the other geniuses who tried to help humanity in getting more free with their ideal systems, the same people who'd like "infidels" and anyone who carried out a "diverse" lifestyle (homosexuals, transgender for example) to suffer eternal pain. Here in Italy a couple who can't conceive children simply by sexual intercourses cannot try to use any other conceiving process thanks to the Vatican influence. Obscurantism still exists.

If you want to be anti-religion, why not just be an atheist? Works for me.
Satanism (I'm not talking about LaVeyan school) is not a religion, it's a metaphoric phylosophical view of the world. The way I see it and reinterpreted for myself. Anyway we are not talking about a math problem, it's a debatable position. Good observation though, but for me Satan it's not a "deity" as you seem to believe a Satanist should conceive. Just a metaphor of it (not properly like Nature in Pantheism).
