Why did he hiss at the girl?

That's one thing I've never understood. I know he was half crazy at that point in the movie, but I thought that he went into the dope field with the intention of trying to save those kids. The girl might have had a chance at getting away if he hadn't blocked her path and hissed at her..

The monkey. Remember the monkey.

Still, it was a stupid scene, in a stupid movie.

"For dark is the suede that mows like a harvest"

He was just thinking about getting the map I think. Then she got shot & killed in front of him and he froze and became aware of the situation he was in.

Because he was half nuts, half self hypnotized and pretending he was an animal and wanted to scare her. Remember he wasn't exactly a moral guy, very typical of a lot of males (call of duty playing type) these days his age. Remember he nearly killed the guy who got bit by the shark. Maybe he thought he could scare them off the island. I don't think he expected her to get shot though. That's the thing I most hated about these people. They were the parasites daffy talked about. I didn't hate the movie, just the people on the island. Entienne was the only one with any compassion at all.

Etienne was a truly good person throughout the movie and he got shat at by people. Keaty was also quite good, he was the only one always trying to get Richard's head clear. And yes, the funny part is that the people who thought they were so different, were the true parasites. It is what makes this movie so great: that we see all those people who are just hedonistic shitbags. Pure egoism. They want all for themselves and give nothing back.
