Debut Questions

I'm half Filipino, and I have a little while to go, but I was wondering if I should have a debut. Would it be weird if I had a debut and I'm only part Filipino, or is it fine? The other question I had was, is a debut is still semi-traditional even if it is not that expensive and held in your own house? I appreciate any feedback that isn't ridiculous or rude! Thanks :)

i think it's OK if your only part Filipino. i mean, it depends on how Filipino your family is traditionally. you can be half, and still have that strong sense of Filipino standards.

it's only weird if you've been in a strictly American family with no Filipino traditions whatsoever. it would probably be hard to explain to a lot of your guest why you're having this traditionally Filipino Debu when you've never been Filipino traditionally.

and really? i think it comes down to the parents (whichever one is Filipino i your case). they're the primary beneficiaries for this event, and it's their opinion that matters the most (to answer your last question). they're ones carrying on the tradition. just pitch the idea to them, tell them what you want, and collaborate.

anyway...i hope this helps a little. and i hope you do get that Debu, and it be one of the best times of your life. it was for me. ^.^

Thank u for your advice! My family is pretty much American, but we still have Filipino-ness (my grandparents in the Philippines send us stuff all the time, I know a bunch of Filipino foods, and I can say a few useless phrases in Tagalog!). Its my mom who's Filipino, and she didn't have a debut, but I've been coaxing her into letting me have one. Again, thx fellow Twilight fan!!

Just a question: is a debut necessary for a female 18 year old?

reply

It's an significant tradition, but it's not truly necessary. My girlfriend never had one and didn't really want one

Different cultures have some kind of a Debut. I know some rich white communities have Debut's for girls when they turn 16 like The OC. They are escorted by male's their age and introduced into high society.

Also Latino culture has something similar to a debut called a Quincenera.
