Im guessing it was for health and safety reasons, but I'd have loved it if the contestant robots could have had better weapons.
Imagine a mini ED-209 design with working machine guns and rocket launchers. Would have made scrap metal of the house robots!

They have to follow a bunch of rules when making a robot and no projectiles is one of them. I like the way it is now, if they used projectiles it would take away from the great head-on collisions that we see now. However, projectiles wouldn't be that effective anyway. There wouldn't be any way to aim the weapon and hitting a moving target is really hard to do, try hitting a moving target with a remote controlled apparatus. It's not going to happen... mounting guns on these things would be a waste.
