It was love at first sight and he was kind to her in the beginning. She was very naive and was like this through out the novela. I agree that he was not deserving of a happy ending because of what he put her through.

Well, his mother was the one who was pulling the strings. She really didn't want him to marry Maria. But she forced him to do it just for the money. He did feel guilty for what he done and apologize for it. All in all, it was a very good Telenovela.
