The 'Skippy' poster mystery

Several years ago, a poster for Skippy showed up at a mall in Santa Monica, CA. It was a fairly standard movie poster, except that the lead was a complete unknown, and the one actor listed whose name was familiar to me was misspelled! ("Pagent Brewster" shouldn't have that 'n'.) It stayed up for 2 or 3 months, but the film never played at any of the nearby theaters during that time. Several months later, it did play for one week, with zero publicity. This all strikes me as an odd way to market a film.
