The End

Okay I watched the movie and I was confused at the end. Did Steve break up with John or not?

reply

I should think so, yes. After all, there wouldn't be much point in continuing their relationship now that Steve has come out to everyone, and John still can't bring himself to do the same. They'd have to go back to complete secrecy, and Steve made it clear to John before that he can't stand to be in that kind of relationship.

John is badly repressed, he carnt accept his sexuality, i found the end really sad as Steven came out to everyone and it was very touching, but John couldnt let go of his jock image and gave in to the norms of everyday society.

I agree Hippiegal, but that is so true of life. He was so afraid to give up his jock image it cost him the first real love he had experienced. Will he ever come around and "come out"? I can sure bet you if he was afraid of his scholarship being at stake he wouldn't. How sad for him. How very sad.

You SHOULD do something soon. It's seems pretty lonely and depressing if you have to keep that all to yourself. I'm sure that whoever you tell will still love you just the same, but if they don't (which I doubt unless they are REALLY REALLY REALLY against the idea)... then it's their own loss. No need to put your life on hold in order to try and make others happy.

i hated the end.
i'm sick of gay movies that have the same ending: the protagonist comes to terms with their homosexuality, and is bittersweetly happy but NO ONE EVER ENDS UP TOGETHER!
i just want a happy ending, dammit!
ugh, sorry for the rant, but i'm sick of bittersweet or just downright tragic endings to gay films.

What are the other films you had problems with? (BBM doesn't count - too obvious.) If you haven't seen them, Beautiful Thing, Latter Days and two French films I really like - Juste Une Question d'Amour/Just a Question of Love and A Cause d'un Garcon/You'll Get Over It. No Academy Award winners, but four good gay films with upbeat endings (and something to think about before you get there).

"Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up."

if you want happy ending watch beautiful thing, another great film

While the end of Beautiful Thing is definitely a happy one I`m not sure if it is real or just a fantasy, whereas the end of Get Real is definitely realistic without being too gloomy and in keeping with the mood of the rest of the film.

The ending is very sad in this movie, but Steven did the right thing, he can't wait for John forever. Steven was more mature than John. I feel bad for John, his fear cost him love. It was ridiculous for him to put his friends ahead of Steven and actually physically hurt Steven. How could John do that??
It makes me sad that there are guys out there who hide. When I realized I was gay I didn't care who knew.
But maybe that is because I was born and raised in San Francisco.

I don't know, I could be wrong, I often am.

I think John was afraid of what his life would become. It was not until 2001 that having gay sex with a man younger than 18 (which I think Steve was) was illegal in the UK.
