Sutherland as Beauregard

I liked the movie very much and am a fan of Donald Sutherland's, but from all I can remember reading about Beauregard, Sutherland kept breaking through my disbelief, if only from a standpoint of height -- I believe Gen. Beauregard was a man of Napoleonic dimensions, literally (who Armand Assante played, ironically.) I'd have liked to see them (Assante and Sutherland) switch places, to be honest.
