Does anyone know...

1. Why the Marquis dress up like a woman?

Spoiler below (maybe)

2. Why did Lady Zhao sent her new lover Jing Ke to assassinate the Emperor knowing that Jing Ke will failed and get killed?

3. Lady Zhao's homeland the Zhao Kingdom was attacked by the Emperor's army. Why she would help the Emperor now by sending the assassin so the Emperor will have an excuse to attack the Han Kingdom ? (I know it was her big idea in the first place)

4. Jing Ke was suppose to be an awesome assassin. Why could'nt he kill the Emperor? He also didn't put up much of a fight. Did he suddenly got the Jet Li syndrome thinking that this Emperor will keep his promise and will do good for All Under Heaven?

reply

1. I think it's because he's like the Court Jester, and was certainly working the "I'm a fool" angle anyway.

2. Any chance is better than not trying. It was Jing Ke decision anyway.

3. He will do this anyway.

4. They broke his sword in half, but he didn't know until he drew it. The backup plan was for his assistant to carry a spare, but he got scared and couldn't go through with the plan. If he had got a sword out, the King would have been killed, but history being what it is.....

reply

Gee, I totally missed the backup plan and the broken sword. Thanks for pointing them out.
Thank you for answering all my questions. You're a big help cpuuk! :)

marquis is not only a jester, but a eunuch.
and a false eunuch as he had children with queen.
it is a mystery to all chinese.

reply

1. Yes, whl is right, he was a eunuch, and even if he wasn't physically one, he was stilly policitally a eunuch, and those were the socially accepted behavioural norms for them at the time.

2.Yup, a chance is better than no chance at all.

3.It's the Yan kingdom, not the Han, they already captured the Han at the beginning of the movie, that's what the horse/chariot scene was about.

4.Yes, but you have to remember that the King was also very cabable of handling himself, he may be an emotional mess, but in the beginning fight scene, you get to see what a skilled and superior warrior he is, so he possibly could be the assassin's equal.

Thank you for all your answers. I watched the movie again and understand a lot more about the plot.

1) I think the MArquis dresses up as a woman and acts kinda camp because it disarms the king, it makes himself look harmless and weak while all the time he's plotting the demise of the kingdom to install himself or his sons onto the throne. Look at the scene where he claims he's scared of heights even to the extent of being on a horse and everyone laughs at him like hes a wussy, but when the king is out of sight he drops his act and crosses the high planks with ease where he previously put on a show for the king. I think thats why the king was shocked to find out that the marquis had offspring, it was as if every piece of the puzzle fell into place, he realised that the marquis was a very dangerous and politically astute man. If you think about Jing Ke, his assasination sequence at the end, he acted like a weak man to gain the trust of the king.

2) Lady Zhao sent Jing Ke to assasinate the emperor thinking that Jing Ke would succeed, this is because in her previous plan concocted together by the king and her, she would send an assasin to kill him but he would be ready, he wore armour under his robes and he thought he was going to be able to convince the assasin to abort his plan either because he was intimidated to be in the presence of the king and his men and more importantly the king believed his re-unification plan would sway this assasin to give up his plan. Jing Ke was a renown assasin because he was not afraid of dying and a great swordmaster, these things would allow him to succeed where others would fail. I think General FAn may have deserted to Yan Kingdom intentionally because he sees that Lady zhao has lost sight of the reunification plan so he goes there to sacrifice his life in order for the original plan to play out. I think this because he seems to have been loyal to the king up to his death.

3) Again i think thats because it was her and the king's plan together that the king would see it as part of the plan and nothing would happen to him because of the things ive mentioned above, however lady zhao having seen the destruction of the other kingdoms by Qin forces has been totally put off by the kings plan, she decides to send an assasin that does not fear death so he would surely suceed.

4) I think he would have killed the king had his sword not been tampered with, he had the upperhand throughout the fight, the king was slow and clumsy because of his hidden armour and robes, and none of his subjects could protect him because they were unarmed. I think his death served a purpose to remind the king about his commandment promise to re-unify China.

Ezekiel made some good point but i believe he got confused about the part about general fan. because general fan actually did abandoned king of Qin after witness his increasing cruelity and twistness, he has no intention to help king of qin and agrees with lady zhao that such a vicious tyrant needs to be removed thats why he didnt hesisate to gave his life in order for the real assasination (not the planned assinasin) to successed, you might ask if he wanted king of Qin dead why is he still loyal to him and kept his secret upon death? it might be hard for most modern minds to understand or believe now, but back in those days loyalty and honour are firmly planted in people's mind, especially general fan has served king of qin for all his life so he is conflicted by what he was taught to do and what his conscience requires him to do, at the end he chose to aid Jing Ke to assasin the king to prevent further tragic deaths, but his rooted royality also made him feel guilty about such betrayal thats why he wasnt hesitate to give his life away, both to assist the assasination AND repent his crime of betrayal by his own death, and it was a code of honour to not break a gentleman's promise once it was made, so even upon the death he could not and would not shame his last bit of respect by spill the king's secret....

by the way, this whole event was actually recorded in the chinese history so it wasnt made up by the director, and let me tell you another historical tale happened during that warring states period- a politic refugee named Wu Zixu escapes from his state pursued by the soldiers and was blocked by a river, a fisherman learnt of his tragic story and was kind enough to sail him across, after they got to the other side, Wu tried to gave him money as repayment but the fisherman refused, then Wu Zixu asked him not to tell anyone that he came this way in case the soldiers follows up, the fisherman pomised right away, upon departure, Wu still feeling unsecure and reminded the fisherman again and again, the fisherman felt his honour and pride has being insulted because Wu didnt believe his words, so he drawn Wu's sword and cutted his own throat, to prove to Wu that his promise wasnt a lie also cleanse his honour by death....

yea very extreme eh? but thats how it was back in those days, people places honour pride and respect above everything else including their own lifes, thats why Jing ke went ahead with the assasination even though he knew he would die wither success or fail, and thats why the Zhao kingdom would rather all their children dead than let them become slaves of Qin. it might be hard for our modern minds to swallow but thats how it was, and with all due respect, for them..... ^^

The Marquis was a squire of the Prime Minister, Buwei, who may have been the king's father. (The only reason Buwei may not have been Qin's father is Qin's brutal character is more in keeping with the royal characteristics.) There is a line in the movie to that effect. I've heard a theory that Buwei and the Queen mother (the King's parents) installed the Marquis in the palace disquised as a eunuch. I think all history tells us is that the Marquis was in fact quite viril and there was a big uproar and Buwei, the queen mother and the Marquis were all executed. I think Kaige made up the rest of the story with these factoids in mind. If anyone knows more, please enlighten us.
