The children...

I heard on the radio that there was a top-50 made of the most horrifying scenes in movie history...well a scene from Psycho is number one there...but to me that scene with children of Zhao is the most horrible thing I've seen in the movies...

Yeah that was pretty brutal.

Well, it's not a gory scene - blood & guts - but it is harrowing to watch.

You guys must not have seen a lot of horror movies...

It's not a case of having seen a lot of horror movies or not. I have seen a fair number, in fact I'm quite a fan of Asian horror as it happens (that's the original versions of a lot of the films that Hollywood butchers). The difference here is that horror movies tend to be fiction. The fact that this film is based on historical events makes it all the more chilling.

Put yourself in the position of looking in to those childrens eyes and consider if you had had the guts to do what they did. Imagine the screams and manic clawing in the air of their hands as they try to grab enough air as the earth is poured over them. The desperate looks on their faces as they realise they are going to die, looking at you, pleading for you to save them. I don't know about you, but that produces goose-bumps up the back of my spine. The fact that one human being can do that to another causes me far more sleepless nights than watching a horror movie.

YMMV of course.

I'd say this scene and the scene in Titus with Lavinia (I won't explain it, I'll let you see it yourself) would be tied for the two that were the most difficult for me to watch. Chen Kaige does have a way of tearing out your heart with his movies though.

Oh, I was thinking about the other scene with children - when they kill the Queen Mother's children she had with Marquis by hitting them on the floor. I found that scene much more brutal...
