Chen Kaige is a great director, but he seemed to have reached his peak with Emperor and the Assassin. After this film, he has really gone downhill. What happened?

Well, I think his peak is Farewell My Concubine, and I loved Together. I even liked The Promise for what it is - a campy movie.
