Trixie's condition

Trixie's systematic and constant mangiling of every idiom she uses seems to be consistent with some medical condition. I know that there are types of brain damage that could cause very unusual and selective kinds of aphasia, including excessive creation and use of personal neologisms and substituting letters, syllables or words. Can anyone trace her problem to any specific disorder? That would be interesting to know about.

Emily Watson always makes her character interesting. the gum chewing, the odd movements like when she takes off her coat in the restaurant she keeps turning after the coat is off. It's all to affect a kind of eccentricity, something endearing, yet attention getting. She also seems to have dyslexia of the mouth. She makes Trixie someone for us to pay attention to, and expect something special from, like a surprising wealth of courage and intelligence. The cast of this movie is what carries it, both the well known actors and the unknown actors are the best. I forgot how good Nick Nolte can be.

There is mention of her being hit on the head with a bowling ball..

I had an adult student who was illiterate because of a neurological problem, not for want of intensive remediation. Her conversations sounded just like Trixie's; the words and phrases had a shape like common phrases of the English language, but betrayed a lack of awareness on her part that they could be represented or reproduced with the precision which we use to understand and use language effectively. Her perception was that we looked at the written word and improvised what we thought it sort of said, and she did the same. And this is a way to show us how dyslexia works in Trixie's brain. It would be constant and irreparable, just as in the film.
Hit in the head, kept isolated at home to serve an invalid, failure by the chool to identify her special needs as a child, likely cigarette and alcohol consumption in utero, Trixie's is an oft-told, if mangled, tale.
