Why did they go to the sect (SPOILERS)?

I was a bit confused with this episode (when the group, towards the end, went to the sect bringing them presents). Were they trying to break the sect or what?
Any suggestions?

I assumed they were attempting to 'parlay' with the sect by bringing gifts, or - more probably - they were 'parlaying' with the intention of undermining the sect's interdict on symbols of 20th C capitalist largesse etc. Certainly, the gifts of mobile phones etc seemed to be received as being highly seductive :)

The black-wearing-sect seemed to have some sort of the quarrel with the red-wearing-sect, but I didn't understand what it was about.
